My first experience with an emotibomb was last year, when I managed to obtain a set of eight different ones on eBay. Unfortunately upon arrival, it was very clear that they were fairly old and rather scentless; I ended up throwing them into the tub during a single shower, and watching as they all fizzed away in a matter of seconds. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.
When Lush announced that they were bringing out Up You Gets, I was initially very excited by the prospect - the write-up made the bomb sound absolutely divine and the product description sold itself to me almost immediately.
With a selection of beautiful smelling citrus ingredients; lemon, lime and grapefruit oils, I was hoping that this product would offer me the uplifting and highly refreshing experience that it promised. I was rather impressed then, when my handful of Up You Gets arrived and quite literally blew me away with how strong a scent they possessed. If you love the sweet, zesty scents you find in bath bombs such as Avobath and Dragon's Egg, this product will be right up your alley. If anything, I'd say it possesses an even stronger scent than both of these ballistics combined.
So what is an emotibomb? According to Lush, this unique bathroom companion works in the same way that you would expect a bath ballistic to do -only it's designed to work in the shower instead. Simply pop one of these on the floor by your feet and go about your normal shower routine. When the warm water meets the bomb, it'll fizz away and release a cloud of fragrant steam that alters your mood, dependent on the purpose of the emotibomb.
Up You Gets has been designed to invigorate your senses - helping you to come to terms with another 5:30am wake up call. Used first thing in the morning, it definitely works at improving your disposition and makes for an enjoyable start to the day. As the water hits the emotibomb, you do experience a wonderfully strong citrus smell almost immediately. However, one problem that I found with this is that this aroma is somewhat masked by the smell of whatever other products you are using in the shower at the time, if you place the bomb too close to the plughole. This morning I chose to lather myself in the wonderful Rose Jam Shower Gel and was then unable to detect the smell of the emotibomb for the rest of my shower.
To prevent this from happening, I placed my second Up You Gets about a metre from the plug so it wasn't constantly submerged under the running water. This time I found that I was able to smell it throughout my entire shower and I was impressed by how strong the scent was from beginning to end.
When placed a matter of centimetres from where I was standing, I found that Up You Gets lasted for close to five minutes under the running water. This doubled when I set it back, making it much better value for money. Some Lushies even suggest that you break the emotibomb in half and use it for two different occasions. However, I can imagine that this would take away a large proportion of the fragrance and render it almost pointless for those of us who want something strong to wake us up.
I really enjoyed using this product and I can imagine investing in it again, if Lush ever make it available. It's an especially good idea for those Lush fans who cannot enjoy baths for whatever reason, although I can imagine that most bath bombs would work in the same way as this emotibomb if you were to try.
In all fairness, I think it is a bit of a novelty product, not one that I would use all of the time. At £3 a piece, it's a little expensive for the few minutes of usage it offers the consumer and unlike a bath bomb, it doesn't leave your skin any more nourished - neither does it permeate your body with it's fragrance and leave you feeling wonderful.
Instead of using all of my bars in the shower, I've opted to place my existing ones around the house as I've found that they freshen up the room wonderfully. This way I can enjoy Up You Get's fragrance for far longer than I can in the shower.
