Dirty Perfume is definitely not a fragrance I would naturally gravitate towards, especially if I had a selection to choose from. I like something that's sweet and fruity, but something that has longevity on my skin. However, after trying out Lush's Dirty Springwash Shower Gel and the Dirty Toothy Tabs, and enjoying them both, I thought there wasn't any harm in trying out the perfume as well.
Launched in 2011, the fragrance features lavender, neroli, sandalwood, oak moss, tarragon, thyme and mint; a unique and interesting concoction that boasts multiple layers for wearers to enjoy throughout the entire day. Initially I wasn't that interested in trying Dirty as I'm not particularly enamoured by mint-scented products. However, after reading about the many ingredients that make it anything other than a typical mint product, I just had to give it a go...
On the surface, the perfume gives off a cool and refreshingly minty scent; reminiscent of the initial scent you get when unwrapping spearmint chewing gum. Unlike other mint products, the scent here is both fresh and light, not the acidic, overwhelming fragrance that you'd expect. The fresh thyme really makes it's mark as well, establishing itself as one of the key elements here - you can't smell one without the other. Both of these ingredients compliment each other really well and make up the strongest tone in the perfume.
After spraying it onto the skin, the fragrance gets to work quickly, merging and changing all of the time to give you different smells throughout it's stay. It's not long before the natural sweetness of the lavender comes through, pairing with the spearmint to produce a wonderful herbal, woody smell. Elements of the neroli and sandalwood also come though, adding a floral kick to it.
In fact, all of the ingredients Lush have brought together, compliment each other wonderfully and create a rich and complex fragrance, one that grows with you throughout the day. You really only need to use this lightly as the skin retains the scent for 5-6 hours easily, sometimes longer. What I found fascinating is that this perfume is a lot rounder and more complex than the shower gel, despite possessing the same ingredients; I guess some concoctions work better in certain formats.
Although this was initially promoted as a masculine smell, I really think that this is the perfect balance of both worlds. It's not as harsh or potent as Breath Of God, but it is a crisp, clean scent unlike any of the citrus and floral variations that Lush offer.
It's not a perfume I would automatically run out and buy again, but it's definitely one that I've grown to love and appreciate more than I thought I would. Although the Dirty range contains a shower gel, toothy tabs, soap, body spray and shaving cream, I don't find that these products all smell the same, and I'd say this perfume is closer to the shaving cream more than anything else.
