Get Closer Solid Deodorant

When the Lush Oxford Street store first opened some five years ago, the company brought out so many new dusting powders: one of which was called Get Closer. While not strictly advertised as a deodorant, most of Lush's dusting powders are versatile enough that they can be used in this way, and this is perhaps the reason why this solid rendition appeared at the Showcase event last year.

What I will say about this solid deodorant is that it does a good job at replicating the scent of the original dusting powder, which features neroli oil, jasmine absolute and lemon oil. Alongside an extra dosage of jojoba oil, this naked block of deodorant is very close in scent to the wonderful Happy Happy Joy Joy Hair Conditioner and Frozen Bath Bomb, albeit slightly lighter and not as floral-dominated. Instead, imagine HHJJ with a heap of calamine and kaolin powders thrown on top, and you may begin to understand what this exclusive smells like.

On the skin, you can definitely detect the neroli - a light and slightly bitter citrusy aroma that intertwines with the lemon oil and intensifies the fruity element. To compliment this, the jasmine adds its own soulful floral aroma that gives the deodorant a slight sweetness, making it delectable and utterly refreshing on the senses.

Alongside these elements, Get Closer then offers a strong herbal note of calamine, coupled with a dry and slightly earthy note of the kaolin, which I happen to think is perhaps a little more prominent in this format: more so than it is in the dusting powder. Either way, the smell you get is definitely not as clinical as many of Lush's other deodorants but there is still something very clean-smelling about this fragrance that I think works well.

At risk of repeating myself, I was initially worried about the strength of this solid deodorant, as I imagined it would just crumble when I applied even the slightest amount of pressure: it is definitely not as resilient as the likes of Aromaco Solid Deodorant by any means. However, it is fairly straight forward to use and the product comes away really easily on the skin, so you don't need to apply much in the way of pressure at all.

What was great about this deodorant was the fact that it was far easier to apply as a block as opposed to bottled powder. Trying to apply a powder without spilling it all over the place is a rather tricky task. However, when it came to The Get Closer Solid Deodorant, I found that simply massaging it gently under my armpits was enough to get what I wanted out of the product. While my armpit was left slightly dusty afterwards, it certainly didn't cause me any problems and I certainly didn't develop any stains on my clothes from it being this way.

Like most of Lush's dusting powders and deodorants, this one has a great level of absorbency - thanks to the inclusion of the kaolin - so any sweat that develops on your skin across the day will be absorbed fairly quickly and your armpits will be left fairly dry.

As I have stated in other reviews, this deodorant is not an antiperspirant, so it will not prevent you from sweating at all. Instead, it just helps to absorb the sweat so it doesn't have time to go stale and develop an odour, and if you sweat quite profusely at times, reduce the amount of 'damp' that remains on your skin.

After using it for near on a month, I found that Get Closer definitely worked at eradicating smells that may have accumulated throughout the day, and it was very easy to reapply the product whenever I felt like I needed to. In a typical day, I felt I needed to reapply about 5-6 times, although this may just have been my desire to be super clean: you may be able to reduce this number by half and preserve the life of the deodorant for longer. 

However, what I should point out is that this solid deodorant wasn't very effective both before and after the gym. As I work out most days, I really noticed that I would start to smell my sweat a little more prominently if I used this deodorant over my usual Nivea variation. As I have found with some of Lush's deodorants, this solid product is not as effective when you're someone who sweats a great deal or when used during a time when you're perspiring a lot because of physical activity. In these moments, I had to reply on my regular shop-bought variation to see me through my workouts.

Ultimately, this solid deodorant is actually quite effective at what is does and offers a rather lovely floral aroma to boot. I honestly think that I just need to continue using this for a few more months and I should hopefully notice even more changes in the way that my body responds to this.

Good Day Sunshine Soap

Whether it was because I'd only recently watched the film with my class, or because the movie has been such a huge hit over the last couple of years, but when I first saw the design of this soap, it immediately reminded me of the Disney classic, Moana. And yes, that song popped straight into my head from that moment onwards and remained there for the rest of the day.

Good Day Sunshine Soap is one of two brand new soaps to have been added to the regular line recently: initially exclusives for Liverpool but obviously popular enough to have made it into the mainstream. Both Good Day Sunshine and Michelle Ma Belle also happen to be half of a four-piece soap collection influenced by the Beatles, and I only hope that I can get my hands on the other variations in the near future.

What attracted me to this soap was not only its gorgeous bright orange colour, and the fact that the yellow sun design on the front looks like something out of a Mayan engraving, but the fact that it shares its scent with one of my all time favourite bath bombs: Cheer Up Buttercup. If there is one scent that will float your boat this summer, this fragrance is definitely it.

Containing a strong dosage of both lemon, lime and neroli, this gorgeous soap offers a bright, fruity and very refreshing citrusy smell. Yet strangely, the smell that comes out the most here is one of fresh orange juice, with the other elements sitting directly underneath and adding spritzy, uplifting fruity base-notes.

What I loved the most about the smell of this soap however, was the heavy dosage of neroli that came forth as soon as I began using this in the shower. Although far more subtle in the bath bomb format, the green notes of the neroli really bring out a sharp tang to the citrusy notes, and together these ingredients create something that isn't far off the smell of a freshly peeled orange, with the outer skin still attached. Good Day Sunshine is super fresh and fruity and perhaps the perfect scent for the warmer weather that we are experiencing right now.

What is unique about this piece of soap is that the yellow design on the surface has actually been dusted with sodium bicarbonate. This means that the first time you use this soap, the surface fizzes up like a bath bomb and the foam adds a slight tingle to your skin whilst you're washing your body. After the first time, there isn't much left to experience it again. However, it's a nice little touch that gives this soap something a little different to enjoy.  

Lush's statement about this soap is: the dazzling orange, vegan aquafaba base offers notes of sparkling lemon myrtle, zesty lime and uplifting neroli to flip your mood sunny side up, while exfoliating chia seeds offer a delicate polish that leaves skin feeling soft and bright enough to rival the sun. While I wasn't able to see the chia seeds in action, my skin did feel really soft afterwards, so I assume that this was the work of the hidden ingredient. 

What I will say about Good Day Sunshine is that the soap tends to lather up really well the first time but then tends to only produce a sort of thin, orange liquid consecutive uses afterwards. This is not a soap that foams up all that easily. Having said that, I found that the orange 'lather' was very easy to spread across my body and I didn't need to massage the soap for more than a few seconds to produce enough 'soap' to apply to my entire body.

This meant that I was able to place Good Day Sunshine away from the water fairly quickly and preserve as much of the soap as I possibly could. As the soap dried in a fairly moderate amount of time, my piece barely shrunk after using it for a week straight and I can safely say that this should last as long as a regular piece of soap would. Despite this, if you're someone who is less conscious of how much you're using, you may find that this soap shrinks a lot quicker than regular soaps, and this is when the £7 price tag may seem a little excessive.

Once I had rinsed the suds from my skin and relished in the delicious fruity smell that had engulfed my entire bathroom, I was really impressed to discover that the fragrance of this soap also lingered on my skin quite heavily. After towelling myself down, I was able to detect both the fruity element and the green-like undertone quite strongly on my body and my hair, and this stayed with me for a good couple of hours afterwards. 

As if this wasn't enough, my skin also felt really soft and smooth and refreshed, and there was a radiance across my hands and legs that I associate with all of the wonderful citrus oils that are present in the ingredients. If anything, using Good Day Sunshine just reaffirmed why Cheer Up Buttercup is one of my all-time favourite bath bombs, and why I love this scent an awful lot.

While I am grateful that Lush have brought this out as a regular item, it does make me wish that the company would bring out a shower gel, body lotion or body spray in the same fragrance, as that would be simply sublime. Inspired by an iconic band, this soap had a lot to live up to and I honestly think that they have matched that expectation perfectly. This is a wonderful addition to any bathroom and I shall be using this all summer to match the sunshine outside.

Happy Pill Toothy Tabs

One thing I have learnt over the last couple of years is that the only way to become a morning person is to change your perspective on life. There is something truly magical about transitioning your mindset into feeling happiness when you wake, no matter what that time may be, and it will completely revolutionise your life if you can do so. 

Although there is not such a thing as a lie-in for me anymore and my alarm goes off most mornings at 5am, I am usually really spritely and energetic when I initially wake up. Following my routine really helps me to begin my day in the right frame of mind and set off on the right foot. And usually I experience very little in the way of 'drama' when this happens. 

However, with the recent release of all of Lush's new oral care, there are times when the 'unexpected' throws me off course for a few minutes. Putting an unexpected flavour of tooth paste in your mouth for example, can sometimes jolt you awake a little too quickly than your mind can fathom.

When I first opened the bottle of Happy Pill Toothy Tabs, I hadn't read the ingredients list and I couldn't even put into words what the brand new invention even smelled like. However, after much deliberation I truly believe that these little tabs share their scent with the Frozen Bath Bomb that discontinued a year ago.

Featuring neroli, orange flower absolute, sweet orange oil and lavender, these little tabs smell like a sophisticated yet very refreshing floral aroma. The orange flower absolute, coupled with the delicate notes of lavender, created a floral cloud that lingers about the fragrance  The neroli then adds a sweet but slightly green-like note that gives this smell its unique twist. Finally, the orange oil brings a gentle fruitiness to the mix as well.

To be honest, I'm glad that Lush have used this fragrance in other formats first. Had they introduced the toothy tabs before the rest of the Frozen range, I would have said that the aroma would have been simply wasted as merely a toothy tab. The fact that there are other beautiful products already only serves to sweeten the deal.

As with all of Lush's new toothy tabs, these particular tabs feature a number of ingredients that I was unsure about and had to research before trying them out for myself - not only to understand how and why Happy Pill work, but also to educate others about the benefits they possess. Firstly, these tabs feature  dicalcium phosphate anhydrous - the main component used to help supplement the body's calcium intake, not to mention preventing the build up of tartar in the mouth. Sorbitol is also used - a natural alternative to sugar which allows Lush to add flavour to this product without adding anything that'll rot your teeth; Lauroyl Sarcosine not only helps the product to foam up in the mouth, but is also used to remove unwanted bacteria that may cause problems in the future.

What I will say about Happy Pill is that the taste is definitely an acquired one. To be honest, I would describe the taste as being a little sweet; slightly floral; and mildly soapy, which will probably turn a lot of people away from trying these beauties. However, there is something slightly alluring about the taste of these toothy tabs that makes me think that I actually like them quite a lot.

These toothy tabs are by no means going to leave you with a refreshing taste in your mouth. However, my teeth and mouth did feel really clean after using these daily and the taste lingered long enough to keep my breath 'fresh' throughout my mornings at work. 

Much like many of Lush's non-potent tabs, you can consume food almost immediately after using these tabs and the taste won't hinder your tastebuds. For this reason, Happy Pill is great for those 'brush and go' sort of people such as myself. However, I will be honest and say that I can imagine many consumers will be a little put off by the taste that does indeed linger on the tongue, because while it isn't at all disgusting, it's definitely not one that I can describe as being particularly nice either.

Happy Pill Toothy Tabs are definitely one that I would recommend that you try for yourself, as they're a flavour that will divide fans down the middle very quickly. Having said that, if you're someone who likes their oral care to be as simple as black and white, I would definitely avoid giving these a whirl.

Time Traveller FUN Bar

During the Halloween season last year, Lush unleashed a handful of a brand new FUN Bar called Witches' Cauldron, which was the first of its kind: a beautiful little tube with a normal sized bar of fun and three little miniature bath bombs to use if and as you please. This year Lush have created another rendition called Time Traveller, which has now become an exclusive for the Liverpool store.

Sharing its scent with Calacas, this highly colourful bar of cornflour offers a bright and fruity lime scent, with a wonderful thread of bergamot underneath to give the fragrance a little 'greenery' as well. Fans of the popular smell will appreciate that its transferred well into this format, and smells more of less identical to that of the Calacas Shower Gel.

Much like with Witches' Cauldron, this FUN bar was slightly harder than any of the other bars I had been using at the same time, which made me appreciate how easy this was to break a small piece off with each use, and how well it functioned in the shower as well.

I only needed a piece the size of half a penny to wash my whole body with in the shower, and even then I think I could have got away with using even less. Massaging it between my hands with a little water heeded an impressive amount of light and fragrant bubbly lather, and it was super easy to transfer across to my skin. Upon rinsing the product away, I found that the aroma stayed with my skin for a short while, and the soft feeling that the FUN Bar created lingered around for a good many hours later.

To use in the shower, you simply have to break off a little of the bar, add a little moisture and then massage across your skin. The FUN produces a colourful, soapy foam to wash with and is easy enough to use. Use too much however, and you’ll find large sticky chunks will be littering the floor of your shower, which then needs to be washed away with the water. 

The three little bath bombs that came alongside the FUN bar weren’t exactly the most potent of fragrances to be fair. However, I was not expecting them to be. What they did offer was a bonus little extra fun to be had in either the water or the shower (emotibomb anyone?) and these did nothing but compliment my experience whilst using the Time Traveller FUN Bar. Creative fans amongst us may decide to build objects with this fun, and use these bath bombs as props alongside this. However, my lack of time and patience meant that I decided to use the bombs in just a regular way and enjoyed an extra bath instead of a shower one evening.

Ultimately, this exclusive set appears to be designed with children in mind: a product that will offer them lots of fun in an evening or act as an exciting present that can be used later on that very day. However, that's not to say that adults cannot appreciate the sentiment of this creation either. 

My only concern, as I mentioned in my review of Witches' Cauldron, is that with no separation between the two, the FUN bar does tend to stick to the bath bomb s and over the space of a couple of weeks the moisture affects the bombs a little as well. A simple cardboard disc in between the two would probably rectify most of these problems or consumers just need to remember to buy and use this fresh.

Overall, this is a really lovely product and I’m really happy that I managed to grab a bar from the Liverpool store. This is definitely something that Lush should bring out as a regular product, as it’s a great little set for somebody looking for a simple gift, and will keep children entertained for a good couple of hours before they head to bed. The scent is spot on with the Calacas range, the bar itself lathers up really well; and while the bath bombs aren’t the most impressive, they do work well as a novelty whilst smelling rather lovely in the water as well.

Calm A Llama Party Piñata Bath Bomb

Most of the time humans don't actually know what they want, even though they think that they do. This is where Lush come into play. Not only do they seem to know what it is that you want, but they also seem to know what you want even if you don't know what you want yourself to begin with. Confusing much? I hope you get my point nevertheless. 

When Calm A Llama Party Piñata Bath Bomb first made an appearance on the Lush website last month, I never even realised that I had wanted a llama-shaped bath bomb until that very moment. Yet the second I saw it's single eye staring back at me, I just knew I wouldn't be able to rest until I got my hands on one, hence my point about Lush knowing what I don't.

Priced up at £7.95, I will say that this bath bomb is rather on the expensive side. Whereas Cilla Caterpillar came as two separate bath bombs, this one you would quite literally need to piñata the hell out of it to break it into smaller pieces. Perhaps that's the idea behind this one although I wouldn't particularly want to pay close to £10 for a bath bomb that I need to smash up before I can use it. If there's one thing Lush SHOULD know, It's that us consumers want our llamas whole before we drown them...Terrible joke for a vegan, I know.

Sharing its scent with the Calacas family, this oversized bath bomb offers a wonderfully sweet, zesty lime aroma, with a rich and very sultry wood-like note as the base on which the scent intensifies from. What is impressive about the smell of this is that I happen to think it's a little more intense than the likes of Calavera Bath Bomb, yet it's also slightly richer than the fragrances you find in both the shower jelly and gel formats.

What is enjoyable about Calm A Llama is that it produces so much froth when it is floating on the surface of the water. Streams of yellow, pink and orange colour pattern the water with puddles of colour and there is not an inch of water left untouched when the bath bomb is finished. With such vibrant colours decorating the tub, you can submerge yourself beneath the water and enjoy almost ten minutes of 'action' before the bath bomb disappears for good.

My only disappointment with this product was the fact that there didn't seem to be much in the way of anything inside to make it truly piñata-like. I was hoping for something to explode out of the middle during my bath; perhaps even a message or a surprise that I wouldn't have been expecting. Ironically, the fact that there didn't appear to be anything worth noting inside was definitely a surprise and a half in itself.

What I really appreciated about this bath bomb was that the scent lingered in and around the bath tub throughout the whole experience, although there were moments when stronger-smelling items thwarted the smell somewhat. Unfortunately, I didn't find that it lingered on my skin as well, which always makes for a better experience if it does. However, my skin felt soft and smooth afterwards and I didn't need to moisturise until the next day.

As this was a limited release from Lush and only available as part of the party range in the Liverpool store, these may not be available any more for general sale. However, I reckon it's only a matter of time before they make a reappearance, as Calm A Llama Party Piñata Bath Bomb is definitely something worth celebrating.

Apple FUN Bar

There is just something about green-coloured products that excite me more than any other. Whether it's simply because green happens to be my favourite colour, or because I associate the colour with nature and natural smells (hence the reason why it's my favourite colour!), my heart beats a little faster when I see that familiar shade appear across my screen. 

As far as FUN Bars go, Apple is easily one of the most vibrant ones to date, and whether it's a subconscious pairing of the colour and scent together, the smell of the So White fragrance just seems that little bit more delicious than it does in every other formats.

Replicating this popular scent family perfectly, this little bar of Fun features an array of ingredients that create a crisp, refreshing and very fruity apple aroma. Imagine biting into a perfectly sweet and delicately sour Granny Smith apple, and you'll be able to smell this product before you've even had a chance to purchase it.

As with all of the other FUN bars that Lush offer, this one is versatile in how you use it and does a great job in each role. Firstly, this is a great replacement for either your shower jelly, soap or gel. Simply take a small piece (about the size of a grape), wet it under the shower hose and massage it directly across your body. The bar foams up a treat and produces an impressive amount of light, fluffy lather that can be distributed across your skin with ease.

Just like Lush's shower gels, this bar leaves your skin really clean and with a sweet, crisp apple fragrance to accompany you for a good hour or so after your shower. While it's not as moisturising as the gels and jellies, I don't find FUN bars to be as drying on the skin as soap can be, even though they don't offer the complex scents you'd expect with Lush soaps.  

Secondly, FUN can be used in much the same way as a bubble bar: crumbling a small piece under the running tap to produce some bubbles as part of a cocktail. What I will say is that you don't get much more than just a light shade of green in the water when using this particular one, and it's definitely not as moisturising as an actual bubble bar. However, I did find that I could smell traces of Apple FUN when I used this in the bath with a Groovy Kind Of Love Bath Bomb, which is impressive given how strong this bath bomb is.

Finally, this FUN bar can be used as a replacement for a shampoo. While I haven't tried this (due to the number of new shampoos that Lush have unleashed on us recently) I can imagine it would lather up well and leave your hair smelling super gorgeous afterwards. In fact, when I thought about Lush actually releasing a So White-scented shampoo bar, my heart skipped a beat at the mere idea of this being made a reality.

My only concern with Apple FUN, as it always is with any of Lush's FUN bars, is that you need to store this properly to prevent it from becoming a sticky mess at the side of your bath. While I love the fact that it's not in pot so it saves on packaging, you will need to keep this FUN Bar cool and dry in between showers. I would suggest breaking off a few pieces and storing them in a pot, away from any possible running water, as this will prolong the life of the bar.

Fans of the So White scent will no doubt appreciate that their favourite fragrance is currently available all year around, although it's currently rather difficult for most fans to purchase it anyway, as it's only sold in a single store worldwide. However, I hope that, along with the other FUN bars that I have been privileged enough to get my hands on, this one will soon be available online for all consumers to purchase.

Crazy Train Bath Bomb

If I'm in the right mood for it, Lush's playful designs really bring alive the child inside of me, and it's a lovely feeling to see the youthful glow that it brings to my cheeks. As someone who considers themselves to be very creative, bath bombs such as this one spark an extra dosage of excitement inside of me, and I couldn't wait to try it out for size.

Shaped like a locomotive, Crazy Train Bath Bomb wouldn't go amiss on the shelf of a Harrods store: a beautiful blue and red-shaped train with a little scroll of blue paper tucked in the top. This latter feature gives you the opportunity to write a little message to the receiver of this bath bomb, which adds an extra special touch for the father in your life to enjoy.

Sharing its scent with the Prince fragrance - including the recent body spray that was released earlier this year - this bath bomb offers a wonderful combination of mandarin, neroli, orange flower and vetivert.To my nose, the orange flower and the mandarin are the strongest notes to begin with. Crazy Train offers a bitter, green-like fruity smell, that reminds me very much of the smell you get when peeling a fresh satsuma - that sweet citrus aroma with a slight tartness from the peel.

However, alongside this there is a wonderful layer of vetivert that gives this bath bomb a woody base to work from: offering a complexity that is somewhat lost in the shower gel format, but is definitely present here. Having been using the body spray recently, I can honestly vouch that this bath bomb is very close to replicating the scent almost perfectly. 

What I appreciated the most however, was the fragrance when the bath bomb was placed in the water. That's when the citrusy elements of the mandarin and neroli came out in full force, and it was strong enough to leave me feeling like a peeled - but very contented - orange afterwards. The scent was super strong in the water, and I would recommend this to anybody who needs something to help motivate them first thing in the morning.

As if the fragrance wasn't already impressive, the bath bomb itself created a stunning show in the tub. Immediately fizzing upon contact with the water, Crazy Train released a stunning show of thick blue, red and white swirls across the surface. Within seconds, the water had turned a stunning shade of dark blue, and the smell was radiating around the room at the same time. 

Once fully dissolved, I noticed straight away that the water felt super thick and sultry: I could almost feel my skin becoming more and more nourished by the second. After bathing for almost an hour in the tub, I was left with the softest skin I could possibly achieve, and the gentle smell of orange wrapped itself around my body like a warm hug. 

I don't know what the Lush community need to do to convince Lush that most of this year's Father's Day range needs to become permanent, but I only hope the big bosses consider how wonderful Crazy Train would be as a regular bath bomb. I for one, would be buying one of these every few weeks, if it was always in shops, and the only bath bomb that I'd invest more in would be the classic Intergalactic.
