The Bug Liquid Perfume

When Lush first released their range of Gorilla Perfumes back in 2012, The Bug was one of the first fragrances to grab my attention, and for many reasons. Firstly, I fell in love with it's name and the imagery that surrounded this perfume. They say that consumers will often make a split-second decision on whether or not to buy something, based on their immediate response to how a product looks. For me, it's quirky name and interesting design had me hooked instantly.

Secondly, the very nature of how and why Lush released this perfume also had me interested from the get-go. Described as an 'unsettling and disjointed perfume', The Bug was created as a protest against modern age surveillance in it's many forms, representing the paranoia that comes with secret filming, security cameras etc...

This perfume is definitely an acquired taste; much like the popular Tramp Shower Gel, it's a love it or hate it kind of scent. Made from a combination of galbanum, black pepper, sandalwood and elemi oils, this is a strong and very unique fragrance, one that took me a while to appreciate.

In the bottle, The Bug gives off a very sharp, pungent sandalwood smell; it's a very earthy, woody scent that smells to me, like damp moss or freshly cut grass. To pad out this smell, the elemi oil adds it's spicy and sharp citrus aroma, which lifts the former ingredient a little and gives it a bit more character. Together, these two ingredients create a rather heavy scent, which wasn't my cup of tea at all. However, once applied to your skin, the perfume matures very quickly and becomes more of a sweet, earthy but slightly floral scent. There is also a slight peppery note that reminds me a little of the Lord of Misrule Bath Bomb. It's very subtle in the mix but works well with the other ingredients.
Despite appreciating this perfume when it was on my skin, it's not something that I'd want to wear all of the time. Furthermore, as with a lot of Lush's Gorilla Perfume Range, I found that this perfume had all but vanished a few hours after I had initially applied it, and I had to re-apply this a few times each day to top up it's smell. This would make it rather expensive for anyone thinking of using this as their signature perfume.

Overall, this is a really unusual and very unconventional fragrance; one that for some, will be an instant dislike, and for others, will be a gradual appreciation. It is definitely far more pleasant on the skin, so I do recommend that you test it out before making that final decision on whether or not to buy it.

  1. I'm in the LOVE IT camp.. :) But I love Hellstone, Devils Nightcap, Smugglers Soul, and Lord of Goathorn ... so yeah, this one is not for everyone. But for some, this one WORKS. I find spraying it on my clothes makes the scent last for days (on items I don't wash every day). On my wrist ...2 hours, MAX. :( so yeah, that's not so good.
