It was only a matter of time before I found new ways to enjoy my Lush products. Now that I have tried pretty much everything that Lush are currently offering in their shops and I'm on top of my Lush Kitchen orders, I have a little spare time to experiment and convert my favourite Lush products into other formats.
Aside from pining after shower gel, week in, week out, the only other thought that pops into my head on a regular basis is: 'why won't Lush create a body lotion in that scent?' or 'I wonder what a body lotion in that fragrance would be like!'. It seems that when I'm not smearing myself with lotion in the shower, I'm looking for new ways to lather myself with lotion outside of the shower.

What you'll need:
-A bowl
-A spoon
-An empty tub to store your lotion
-2-3 teaspoons of your favourite shower gel
-100g unscented body lotion
I feel a little patronising doing this edition of Lush DIY because I feel as if I'm not really doing anything particularly special here - just taking a simple idea and making it a reality. It's one of those things that I've often thought about but never committed myself to trying out - until now, that is.
This recipe should in theory work with any and all of Lush's shower gels, so while I trialled it with my three favourite products, you could quite easily choose your favourite gel and have a go at creating your own body lotion in the same manner.
Start off by measuring out 100g of unscented body lotion into a bowl. You can opt to make a bigger batch, and if this is something you'd like to do, just double or triple all of the ingredients in the recipe. However, I should state that smaller batches work better as they're far fresher when you use them and 100g will last you quite a while!
As I've had so much success with this product, I again used Calmer Solutions Unscented Body Lotion as I find that not only is this product completely fragrance free as it advertises, but it is also really moisturising on the skin and works as well as some of the more expensive, shop-brought varieties.
Give your shower gel a shake and then spoon 2-3 teaspoons of it into the bowl with the body lotion - the amount will depend on how strong you want the body lotion to be. Stir it around until all of the gel has been completely dissolved into the moisturiser and then leave it to sit for 10-15 minutes. This will give the body lotion a little time to absorb the shower gel and it's scent.
You'll notice that the body lotion will develop a light shade of whatever colour the shower gel is. This is something I found really exciting when making this for the first time and I actually prefer it to the boring white/cream colours that you get from Lush. Don't worry though, your skin will not be stained by this colour at all.
You'll also notice that the consistency of the body lotion is quite light which is due to the oils in the shower gel breaking down the thickeners in the unscented gel. Again, I feel this works to the advantage of the product for many reasons. Firstly, I really dislike lotions that leave your skin feeling greasy and with these ones I didn't find this happened at all. They nourished my skin but were refreshing and very gentle on my body. Secondly, the lotion lasted a lot longer as I needed to use less each time. This means that they are good value for money.
All three of these body lotions gave off smells that replicated the shower gels perfectly and I was really impressed to find that they all left their mark on my skin, which meant I could enjoy each scent a lot longer than I could before. Both the Ponche and the Twilight creations actually outlasted most of the Lush body lotions I have tried, which was awesome.
While I cannot comment on how long these lotions will last, I have been using these for over a week now and have found that they still smell wonderfully strong and fragrant - with no sign of separating or discolouration. Given how over zealous I am being with all of these lotions, I'm unsure whether they'll be around long enough for me to see if they have a use by date.
Having tried all of these out over the past week, I am amazed at the results. As I have been suffering from a rather nasty cold, my hands and feet became incredibly dry and my feet in particular developed areas of dry, flaky skin. After using these lotions twice a day, the dry patches disappeared in a matter of hours and my skin was left feeling really smooth, supple and soft.
For such a simple idea, I am very surprised that it hasn't been tried out by Lushies all across the globe and documented online. However, if there are consumers out there doing this, they don't seem very keen on sharing their endeavours. I really hope this inspires you to try this out with your favourite shower gel and I look forward to hearing and seeing your results!
This looks great!
ReplyDeleteI tried out the DIY shower gel, but it was a fail :( I used quite a thick shower gel to ensure it had a good consistency after I added the shower gel, but it needed up ridiculously runny! It was basically water. I used half of a Drummers Drumming bubble bar (maybe the fact it was reuseable had something to do with it?). The smell was really strange too.
Hmm, hopefully this works out ok, I'm going to try using Prince Charming!
That's such a shame! May I ask what brand of shower gel did you use? I only say this because I used one to make Lord Of Misrule and I had such different results from when I used the one from Calmer Solutions this time. Perhaps try it with this one? It's quite thick but it turns out wonderful. I wish you better luck with the body lotion!
DeleteI will definetly try this!
DeleteJen, does it work with the creams?
What shower gels would you recommend, because I only have Snow Fairy, Rose Jam and Butterball
What an interesting idea! I have made a lot of mixtures with jellies, soaps, body lotions, and shower gels as they are very easy to mix together but it never occurred to me that you could use shower gel and turn it into a body lotion!?! Doesn't the SLS in a shower gel start to irritate your skin after a week or so when the DIY bodylotion sits on your skin all day long? If not, i must try your great idea and make a few shower gel/body lotions myself.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sad i run out of my precious Tramp, and can't have more now that the Supertramp has taken its place. It would have been a wonderful test subject but Twilight must be just as wonderful.
Have you tried the new Charity Pot for your tests? It is so scentless that it makes me wonder if it would work too?
Btw. thanks so much for you blog! This is a wonderful source of information for all and every Lush products out there. I've read this for a long time but never commented before.
Best wishes from Finland!

I've been using this for well over a week now and I've actually found my skin has improved. I think it may be because I don't use very much shower gel at all so while it might irritate/dry out your skin if it was left by itself, the body lotion I use prevents this and because it's so moisturising, it leaves my skin lovely.
DeleteI'm not really a fan of Tramp but I am very surprised they haven't brought it back in the Kitchen yet - it was very popular and I can imagine this being very refreshing on the skin!
I haven't attempted the new Charity Pot yet but I can add it to my rather long list of 'things to try out'. And thank you so much for your kind words - I am so glad you are benefitting from all of the hard work that I do to make this possible - it's all the reason for me to continue and add as much information as I possibly can.

I think the reason that Tramp hasn't reappeared is because of safety concerns about oakmoss one of the ingredients. This has never been stated but there is lots of information about oakmoss and allergic reactions. I am guessing Supertramp was an attempt to create a safer tramp like gel. I am sad but I don't think it will ever be back in its old form.
DeleteI read something similar to this. I'm not sure how accurate it is but someone suggested that the quantities of oakmoss used in Tramp are now illegal under an EU objective, hence Supertramp to fill its space
DeleteThank you Jen for your kind answer!
DeleteAlso thank you to all of you for the information about Tramp and oakmoss. I have never had any problems with Tramp or any other Lush product even though I'm very allergic to many things so i hope Lush will be able to make Tramp reappear using something else instead of oakmoss.
I have a question.. Is it ok for you to have soap on your skin all day long without rinsing it afterwards? I mean, the shower gels are supposed to contain some sort of soaping ingredient and i thought that caused skin burn after prolonged exposure. And also, if you shower after using the lotion, does it makes bubbles in contact with water? I´m really in love with the idea, i´m just wondering about this..
ReplyDeleteAna
Well I've never attempted to shower after using the lotion so I wouldn't be able to comment on the second part but the ratio of shower gel to lotion is very diluted so there isn't much shower gel here to irritate your skin. Plus the unscented lotion I am using is very rich in moisture - I'm actually seriously impressed with how amazing it makes my skin feel so maybe that's why it doesn't dry my skin out at all :)
DeleteI wanna recommend that mixing 2~3 drops of perfumes into unscented body lotion. this recipe has no surfactant which might be cause irritation or drying on the skin.
ReplyDeleteThis is something me and my flatmate were talking about the other day - I definitely want to try it out. I'm just waiting on a new batch on unscented lotion and then I'll give it a go :)
DeleteI've got Rose Jam perfume, so I'll try this out today instead of the shower gel, and let you know how it goes!
DeleteI'm really tempted to try this with my Twilight! It's such a fantastic idea.
ReplyDeleteOn an unrelated note, and if you don't mind my asking, roughly how much would you say you spend on Lush? I'm considering upping my 'allowance' but I'm already a little scared by that amount as it is lol.
Hi there - in all fairness, I spend far too much on Lush, probably around £200-£300 a month, which is extortionate. I definitely need to cut down!
DeleteOh wow, okay. To be fair you must have an amazing collection! Thanks for your answer. :)
DeleteThis would be great with symphony for the skin as a lotion base . because it really doesn't have a scent , thank you for sharing , I love your posts IG creamycandylushfairy
ReplyDeleteDo you think you would be able to make a Twilight lotion using the bath bomb? Do you think it would be similar to using the shower gel or really different?
ReplyDeleteYou could Definitely make twilight lotion using a bath Bomb but I'm not sure how it would differ from using the gel. I was meant to experiment this weekend with this but had all of the Mother's Day stuff to try out and review. This weekend I'll test out the bath bomb to lotion as well as the perfume to lotion ideas and let you know :)
DeleteI am sooooooo glad to read this as I am totally going to make Twiight lotion now!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this tip, Jen. I had various dry skin creams that were unfragranced gathering dust and LOTS of Lush shower gel. I have so far made Grass body lotion and Snow Fairy body lotion. Both had excellent results and I am now sitting with lovely soft skin, enveloped in fragrance....😊 xxxx
ReplyDeleteOhh this is very interesting!! I want to try it with my twilight! I freaking LOVE twilight and can't believe it isn't a solid perfume or body lotion!
ReplyDeleteHeya, was wondering if using a bath bomb like butter ball would work instead of a shower gel?
ReplyDeleteCould you expand upon what you mean? As in to moisturise yourself in the shower?
DeleteHave you thought about trying shower creams? I might attempt a lord of misrule lotion!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds amazing - how would you propose to go about it?
DeleteHi Jen,
ReplyDeleteJust tried Twilight with new Charity Pot and I'm sitting here typing a big THANK YOUUUUU as I am smelling so frigging good lol. I need to try it with a thicker body cream as it is a bit runny. For now, I am in heaven :) thank you again... My annoyance with the void of Twilight perfume is diminished now that I have this.
You're very welcome! I've not yet tried making a Twilight-scented lotion but I'm going to have to give it a go soon as just the very idea of smelling so wonderful all day has me salivating!
DeleteWill be trying with Yuzu and cocoa, Lord of misrule and black pearl! if i can find a decent unscented moisturizer ...
ReplyDeleteDo you think you could try converting a bath bomb into a lotion, or have any suggestions on how you would do that? Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the idea. So far I've made snow fairy, lord of misrule and honey I washed the kids. LOM I used the cream and it is a bit more runny but still works great!! Can't wait to try more!
ReplyDeleteI know you posted a while ago but i would like to comment that a little melted cocoa butter mixed with the thin lotion will thicken it very nicely so it isn't runny if a gel made it that way and its a little easier to travel with still has an amazing smell of a lush product and moisturizes very well to boot.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to make it for the first time. I'm hoping it turns out well.
ReplyDeleteIt has fully emerged to crown Singapore's southern shores and undoubtedly placed her on the global map of residential landmarks. I still scored the more points than I ever have in a season for GS. I think you would be hard pressed to find somebody with the same consistency I have had over the years so I am happy with that. 除毛
ReplyDeleteBlackwood hair products are great. I have been looking a long time for hair products that give me a clean and manageable look. I have been using Blackwood Hydroblast shampoo and Hydroblast conditioner plus a touch of Blackwood Biofuse gel for a few weeks. I can see and feel the difference with these products. Placing my order was simple. My order arrived on time. It was packaged with care. Everything I have experienced from Blackwood has been just as good as it gets. (BLACKWOOD FOR MEN)
