Lush DIY: Violet Nights Body Lotion

It was only a matter of time before I found new ways to enjoy my Lush products. Now that I have tried pretty much everything that Lush are currently offering in their shops and I'm on top of my Lush Kitchen orders, I have a little spare time to experiment and convert my favourite Lush products into other formats.

After my attempt at creating two different shower gels, I thought it was about time that I think outside the box and try something else. As I'm coming close to using up my many pots of body lotion, I thought it would be worth my efforts to attempt making a moisturiser in a scent of my choice. Thus, this wonderful product was created...

What you'll need:

-A Bowl
-A Spoon
-An empty plastic tub (preferably 100g)

-100g Unscented Body Lotion

In all fairness, this was the easiest product to make and easily one of the most successful ones to date. It's a project that when I first came up with the idea, I couldn't believe that no one else had suggested this - it made complete sense, and despite it being a dangerous notion, I really couldn't see how it could go wrong.

First up, pour 100g of unscented body lotion into a bowl. For this experiment, I used Calmer Solution's base lotion and would highly recommend it as it was such a good product to use. Not only is this moisturiser really nourishing on the skin, but it doesn't possess the 'vinegar' element that a lot of unscented base products, despite being marketed as unscented.

Next, spoon in three level teaspoons of Violet Nights Bath Oil. You can add less if you're looking to conserve this rare item. However, I find that these amounts help to create a perfectly fragrant but not overpowering body lotion - adding more would make it too runny while including less would give it a weaker scent.

Mix both ingredients together until they have combined perfectly and then pour into your empty plastic pot. As both ingredients have stabilisers and preservatives in them to give them a long shelf life, this body lotion will last for a while, longer if it's stored somewhere cool in-between uses.

Not only is the light mauve colour very pretty to look at, but this body lotion boasts impressive moisturising properties. While I had to make sure it had been probably massaged into my skin, it dried fairly quickly and left my body feeling super smooth and velvety. Furthermore, the scent was really strong on my skin and remained present for a good part of an hour, which is more than most Lush moisturisers can claim.

For those who love Violet Nights but don't always want to have a bath in order to appreciate the wonderful scent, this body lotion allows you to enjoy the scent and it's nourishing properties all day long. So simple yet equally very beautiful.

  1. because the shower gel is essentially a liquid soap - doesn't that give you dry skin if you rub it in and leave it, even if it's combined with an unscented lotion?

    1. You would think but it's quite the opposite. I've been suffering from the flu for the last few days and for some reason, both of my hands have become incredibly dry and I have patches of dried skin in between the crevices of my fingers. I only had to use this for one day and the dried patches all but vanished. By day three, my hands felt really supple and smooth - similar to how my hands felt when I used Handy Gurugu. I suppose this might not work for everyone but it's definitely worked for me :)

    2. Also, I'm not using THAT much of the bath oil so perhaps that stops it from being overly drying :)

  4. hello! do you think it would work if you melted down, say, part of a you've been mangoed bath melt and used that? i figure bath melts are mostly oils in solid form so it might work, what do you think?

    1. That sounds like a good idea! It's only essentially oils that you are mixing with the lotion so they should make your skin nice and smooth. Plus, You've Been Mangoed in quite a strong smelling bath melt isn't it so the scent should be strong enough to give the lotion a lovely fragrance.

  5. Has anyone tried mixing the perfumes? they are skin safe but with the alcohol would they mix with butters & oils or separate? really love this stuff I have been reading swift crafty monkey blog it's really cool! but what a great idea I may try mixing some butters with twilight for a shower cream. I wish Lush would release a recipe book! I want to make this stuff & not just buy it anymore! it's not fair the kitchen guys get all the fun : (

    1. The problem with a recipe book is, you know how most products contain an ingredient called "Perfume" in the UK, and "Fragrance" in NA? That's actually what they call the Essential Components of the scent - basically, it's the secret recipe of scents and oils and whatnot that they use to comprise their best selling scents, like Honey I Washed the Kids, etc. And much like KFC's 11 herbs and spices, it's copyrighted and kept VERY secret, as it's a company secret. :D

  6. Great DIY! Would you consider doing lush DIY s from scratch? It's just because I don't currently own many of the products you use in the diys. I understand that this may be hard because in the uk you can't just go to your local tesco and find Epsom salts or Citric acid but if you get the chance pleaseeeee pleaseeeee do one from scratch. Ps love your blog <3 xx

  7. Okay, so in my defense, it's 11pm at night and I can't sleep and I was bored. So of course I decided to do a variant of this, having read this before and been intrigued! I used a 45g tub, put in mostly American Cream lotion, two globs of Dream Cream for thickness, and a teaspoon of Violet Nights. It's thin, so hopefully it thickens a bit with time, but it smells pretty good! Vanilla cream and violet, with a hint of the lavender and rose water from the Dream Cream! I shall call it...an American Night's Dream!

Yes, I am that sleep deprived, and yes, I probably should be on more medication that I am. XD

  8. My first attempt at this was very runny. My second was much better! I used Celebrate lotion, Twilight SG and a few drops of Lavender high grade EO. To thicken up the lotion I added some white fine clay Mixed this all together and its perfect!!! Yay, now I have Twilight lotion :).
