Ultraviolet Bubble Bar

When images of the Mother's Day range first surfaced on the internet, this was the product that originally stood out for me. Without knowing anything about its scent, the design and sheer size of the bubble bar was enough to convince me that I needed to buy a handful the second they were made available online. Needless to say, this brand new addition to Lush's collection did not disappoint.

Ultraviolet is everything I look for in a bath product. Firstly, it's absolutely stunning to look at - sporting a rainbow of vivid purples, greens, blues and greys, this beauty jumps out at you from the shelf and makes it one of the sexiest bubble bars that Lush have ever released. Secondly, this bubble bar is gigantic - weighing in at almost 200 grams, this product is similar in size to the likes of The Comforter and Blue Skies And Fluffy White Clouds. Finally, the fragrance that this bar gives off is exceptionally beautiful and offers fans a unique scent that has never been released in a bathing format before now.

Made from a combination of rosewood and ylang ylang oil, with violet leaf and jasmine absolute to round out the scent, this bubble bar is a very natural smelling floral aroma. Sharing it's scent with Lush's new Kerbside Violet Perfume, Ultraviolet gives off an earthy, almost smoky, grassy, violet and rose scent.

An initial sniff gives you a strong, powdery rose aroma - one that smells rather similar to the regular Tisty Tosty Ballistic. However, immediately after this you get a wonderfully fresh and very natural violet smell as well. Together, these two notes create a very rich but equally uplifting floral aroma. If you find Bathos two overpowering or too sugary-sweet for your liking, but you happen to love violets, you'll really enjoy this bubble bar as it's far less stifling on the senses.

While I was briefly disappointed by the smell (I was expecting much more of a Parma Violets sort of scent), it wasn't long before I became accustomed to the aroma and fell in love with how complex and lovely the fragrance was. It smells as if you've buried your nose in a pile of freshly dried flower petals - it's really quite special.

Despite it feeling quite rigid on the surface, this bar is very easy to crumble under the running tap. I would recommend that you cut off the piece that you want to use as I found it a little tricky trying to break this apart with my hands. Given how well this works, you could easily get 4-5 good quality baths from a single bar, so be as generous or as reserved as you want to be.

When it's crumbled under the running tap, it immediately begins to stimulate a mound of light, fluffy and slightly glistening bubbles. Not only this but it turns the water into a deep and very beautiful violet colour - something that fades slightly during the whole experience but doesn't become any less gorgeous.
The only negative aspect about Ultraviolet is that it's nowhere near as moisturising as other Lush bubble bars. Despite leaving the bath feeling soft and clean, the water wasn't as smooth or as nourishing on my skin so I still needed to moisturise afterwards. On the positive side, I could detect slight hints of the violets and rosewood on my skin for a couple of hours after I had exited the bath, and this gives you a great opportunity to prolong that smell by spraying yourself with Kerbside Violet afterwards.

Overall, I am in love with this bubble bar and it is one I will be sure to stock up on before the Mother's Day range is discontinued. Lush state that this bubble bar contains snowflake lustre, however I saw very little of this in the bath or under the surface of the water. Ultraviolet is a great spring product - one that will leave you feeling really relaxed and clean, while offering an uplifting and very natural scent to wash away those winter cobwebs. Beautiful.

  5. Hey Jen! How much does this bubble bar smell like Kerbside Violet? I had a sniff of Ultraviolet in store and fell in love, but I can only get Kerbside online so I can't smell it first. Are they identical or are there some differences? Would like to know before blind-buying. Thanks!

  6. Hi Jen! Thanks for the review - I love this bubble bar just as much (if not more!). Do you think this is a permanent product now? It hasn't left stores yet (neither has bubblegrub actually!) and it's also in the Oxford street store - it's also under the 'new' section on the site. I'm new to lush so I thought I'd ask an expert opinion - cheers!

    1. I hope so! I have noticed that it's still available and on some stores. It's good enough to be a permanent and if it was being discontinued, it would have been sold out by now. I would say that both are staying - especially as I've seen them both in the Oxford Street Store!

  7. Does this smell in anyway like Christmas Eve? Since that didn't return last Christmas, I'm looking for something similar to put in my Lush basket. :)
