Granny Takes A Dip Bubble Bar

This is a product that I actually first used almost three weeks ago and have just been holding out on reviewing it for as long as I can. While I usually like to write about my experiences the same day or at least the first week after trying something out, I always feel a little hesitant to start a review when I've had such a negative reaction to a product.

What I love about maintaining this blog, is that I don't have to censor myself when it comes to any of the products I review. I am NOT sponsored by Lush, I am NOT paid in anyway for these reviews, so I DON'T have to edit what I write because it is my opinion that I am trying to get across. The whole purpose of this website is to offer an independent viewpoint from somebody who is not conditioned to sell products for the company. If my reviews encourage you to purchase products or help you to find your favourite items, that's amazing. However, if they also prevent you from investing in products you might later regret, that's equally rewarding as well.

While I wasn't overly excited about the Granny Takes A Dip Bubble Bar, I assumed that I would enjoy it nonetheless. Looking as stunning as its sibling bath bomb, this exclusive product is slightly smaller in size - coming in at roughly 7cm wide and 2cm deep. Despite its shrunken appearance, the bar is big enough to see you through two very generous baths so it's equal in value to the ballistic edition in this sense.

Containing lemon, black pepper and ginger oil, this bubble bar shares its scent with its older brother - offering a very unique, creamy and slight citrusy fragrance. It is the former two ingredients that dominate the smell of this bubble bar, alongside a very delicate but equally decadent vanilla aroma that pads it out and gives it that extra comforting element.
As with the bath bomb, this product gives off a mixture of vanilla and lemon - not unlike the gentle aroma of sherbet or the thin layer of dusting you find on the surface of Lemon Bon Bons. Underneath this is a very subtle spicy note, which comes from the black pepper and ginger combined. While I couldn't detect the ginger very strongly in the packet, the heat of both of these spicy ingredients comes out a little more once the product has been introduced to the heat of the water. Then I was able to make out a peppery layer that gave Granny Takes A Dip a wonderful multi-layered fragrance in the tub.

Unfortunately, while the bath bomb offered a very colourful and entertaining experience in the bath, this bubble bar edition did the very opposite. As usual, I crumbled half of this under the running water and watched as my bath quickly filled up with light, fluffy bubbles. Despite the vivid design of the product, I discovered very quickly that these colours did not influence the shade of the water and I was left with a tub of rather murky-grey looking liquid.

Furthermore, within five minutes of submerging myself under the water, I found that I was not able to detect the scent of this bubble bar at all anymore. As the bubbles began to disperse, I realised that I was bathing in water that neither looked or smelled like it had had a bubble bar crumbled in there in the first place.

While the water was silky-smooth and my skin felt velvety-soft after I had exited the bath, the experience itself was not one I was interested in trying out again. Strangely, I was able to detect a subtle powdery, lemon aroma on my skin after I had towelled myself down but this didn't last that long and was soon thwarted by the perfume I sprayed on myself afterwards.
This is not a product I was would use again, especially not exclusively by itself. While I would include it as part of a cocktail if I was ever to receive one in a gift set, it's not strong enough or impressive enough to hold its own in the bath. A rather disappointing product in my eyes.

  3. "somebody who is not conditioned to sell products for the company." - I love your reviews, although this made me giggle a bit. I work for Lush, and this isn't the first time I've come across this sentiment. I've had clients who facetiously ask me things like "Oh you must just love everything" or "You probably can't say if you dislike something", which I always laugh at. Sure, as an employee, I'm not going to tell someone that a product is horrible - but I'm not going to lie. I, personally, can't stand patchouli - it gives me a massive headache. (Which sucks because certain products I WANT to love! LOM, even Karma Kream.) Just wanted to share my amusement.

Also, thank you for this review - I was on the ropes about this products, and it's disappointing that it's not bright and colorful like its counterpart. :(

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the review! Of course all employees will have their favourites and those products that they choose to avoid at all costs! I'd find it quite interesting to see someone try and recommend me product that I knew they disliked and see how they went about it :)

The ' conditioned to sell' part was more aimed at those blogs that get sent these products to promote the company - the bloggers that try to keep their personal opinions out of the way in favour of selling the items they've been sent. The ironic thing is that I think I probably have more selling power than a lot of these people, even though that's not the aim of this blog - hehe!

    2. I've had to do that in the past! In fact, it's a big part of what we have to practice, selling things we aren't keen on. I've sold Karma Kream and tons of Karma scented products, simply by being honest - I can't do patchouli, but if you are a fan of the scent, the products themselves are great! Karma Kream in particular, I've used (Even if I have to wash it off afterwards!) and it's very moisturizing and creamy. I love the consistency, I just can't handle the scent!

You're probably right, you have a lot more selling power than they do! I've already made the decision to buy Waves Solid and a few other things thanks to your reviews! If you can get pictures of the tubed lip tints, or swatches of the lipstick colors WITH names (People always seem to just take pictures of the color, not the names with it, weird, right?) I'd be your bestest friend!

    3. Hey! Just curiosity, what product do you mean by "Waves Solid"? I've looked through all of the posts on this blog and haven't found anything fitting that name. Sorry if this is an annoyance! I just haven't heard of it before ahh

    4. Juls - Waves is the name of one of new solid shampoos that's coming out in the Lush Kitchen this week! I've haven't released a full review just yet but I have given a basic one on my Instagram account 😊

I'm planning on posting swatches of all of the eye jewels and lipsticks tonight with names so keep your eyes peeled for that 😀

  4. This review is really helpful thank you as I love the colour/scent of the bomb and was considering this product, now maybe not so much. Do you think that the bubble bar will replace the bomb? I hope not :(

    1. I was really disappointed with this - and although it's not definite, I've heard that it is replacing the bath bomb. Let's hope my sources are incorrect!

  5. Wow that's really surprising/disappointing especially considering that the Granny Takes a Dip bath bomb is so colourful and smells amazing. I was actually going to buy this yesterday but didn't in the end. I might still try it out so I can review it on my own blog, because if I have the same result I think it will be helpful for people to know ^^ Thanks for the great reviews as always

    1. Hey lovely - I would love to read your review of this product just to hear a second opinion. Please link me if you manage to do a review. I always worry that my reviews might put people off when they'd actually really love the product but I can imagine most fans of the bath bomb will be rather disappointed with this bubble bar version!

  6. I do wonder if the general release version of this has a slightly different formula, as it seems a lot stronger scented now than it sounds like the Oxford Street one did.

Mine had a really strong smell that lasted through the whole bath - I really liked it.

  7. So I have both the bubble bar AND the bath bomb in front of me, yet I can't imagine they're the same scent?? The bubble bar smells soo sweet, very strong vanilla presence, but the bomb is very lemony like Rose Jam is. Have you noticed a big difference in that way?
