Figs And Leaves Soap

Despite being available all year round, it has taken me almost two years to finally utilise my block of this soap. Having left it so long, I expected it to be rock hard, scentless and looking rather sorry for itself. However, I was very surprised to find it was still as soft, moist and as aromatic as you would expect a fresh piece to be.

Figs And Leaves is one of those products that I would not naturally gravitate towards if I was to visit a shop. With it's murky, beige-coloured demeanour - striped with glycerine pieces and speckled with fig seeds, this isn't the most attractive soap. However, it is rather effective at doing it's job.

Named after it's key ingredients, this soap features both fresh pieces of fig and is decorated with actual leaves on the top. Unfortunately, my chunk wasn't lavished with the latter feature but it did possess enough inclusion of fig to more than make up for this point.

Firstly, the tiny dark brown fig seeds act as light exfoliators; gently scrubbing the surface of your skin to stimulate blood circulation around your body and remove uneven and dried patches. Lush have successfully calculated the amount of seeds they include in each piece - there's enough here to give your body a great massage, while not going overboard, like in Porridge, where you find there's more 'bits' than actual soap.

Out of the packet, this soap didn't initially win me over with it's scent. Don't get me wrong, it was pleasant enough - a gentle aroma made from the natural sweetness of the figs intertwined with elements of both the aloe vera and the coconut oil. It's a strange creamy, citrusy smell that's rather sophisticated and more on the feminine side if any. However, when it comes in contact with the heat of your shower, this fragrance intensifies and it reminded me of burnt caramel - a  vanillary feast with over ripened dates giving it a wonderful sweetness that makes it good enough to eat. The aloe vera is still present in the smell but it's overshadowed by the figs and coconut. It's absolutely gorgeous.

My love for Figs And Leaves only increased when I discovered that it is really easy to lather up and it produces a surplus amount of soft, creamy foam to clean yourself with. I found that I only had to massage this gently across my body to exfoliate and cleanse effectively. It made a change from all of the stubborn soaps I have been using recently.

Afterwards, my skin felt really soft and moisturised, without the tautness that I get with quite a number of Lush's soaps. The wonderful scent also lingered on my skin, and I was able to detect it on my arms and hair when I got into bed. I didn't experience a cooling effect from the aloe vera but it was gentle enough to use on my face, which was an added bonus.

Figs And Leaves is a wonderful soap and one I will use regularly, especially in the winter months when my skin is dry and flaky. It conditions and strengthens the look and feel of skin and works wonders at revitalising tired and weathered-looking bodies.

The only issues I found with it is that it's soft consistency means it's prone to shrinking quite quickly, even if you make an effort to keep the block dry between uses. However, coupling this with other favourites such as Angel's Delight and Karma, will allow me to stretch this to lasting me a good month.

Midnight Massage Bar

When I first set my eyes on these massage bars back in 2012, I immediately fell in love with the design. What more can you ask for than a sensual, exotic-scented massage bar, shaped to look like one of Salvador Dali's 'Melted Clocks'. There's something extremely appealing about this product; it's almost a celebration of the romanticism of the 1920's/30's, and gives me that same nostalgia that I got when reading Brian Selznick's 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret'.

Depending on when you purchased your Midnight Massage Bar, you might have one of two different shades. Earlier releases boasted a beautiful, rich peachy coloured bar with gold lustre decorating the face of the clock. However, when the bars were re-released for the Christmas 2013 retro range, the bar seemed to have lost the glow it originally had, and is now much more paler in colour.

As the name suggests, this product can be used to aide a full body massage for one or more lucky people. However, it can also be used as a luxury alternative to a body lotion, which is what I tend to Lush's massage bars for. To melt the bar, you rub it between your hands where your body temperature heats the oils up and causes the bar to melt slightly. Using your hands and fingers, you can glide the bar over your body before massaging the oils into your skin.

What I found with Midnight Massage, is that it was rather stubborn at giving away its oils. Whereas massage bars such as Close To You or From Dusk Til' Dawn tend to begin melting immediately when in your hands, this bar took a little while to stimulate. In its defence, when it did begin to melt, the oils it produced were of a lovely consistency - not too greasy and runny, but not too sticky either. I found that once I massaged the oils equally across my body, it didn't take very long for them to absorb into the skin, so I was able to put my clothes back on within 15-20 minutes.

Furthermore, I really appreciated the fact that the side I was holding didn't melt between my fingers, and only the side in contact with body did. This just helped to make things a little less messy while I was applying the product, and it also meant that the massage bar are able to retain its shape for a lot longer than other massage bars have done so in the past.

Much like all of Lush's other massage bars, this one has a ton of wonderful ingredients to give your skin a royal feast; cocoa butter, shea butter and olive oil are all present to help moisturise and remove dry, scaly skin; the inclusion of exotic fruits such as figs, carob pods and quince fruit mean that this product is also rich in antioxidants, and a great way to replenish the skin. Lush have then chosen a refined, sexy jasmine scent that will not only linger on the body long after your massage, but will also ensuring the persistence of memory to help you through your day.

If you dislike jasmine, this is definitely a product you should avoid altogether. While it is not anywhere near as strong as the jasmine in the Lust range, it is definitely the strongest component in Midnight Massage. Coupled with the fig, which gives the bar a rich but gentle fruity note, this massage bar offers a wonderful, heady aroma - perfect to use before a night out on the town. What I loved about this product was that once it was on my skin, it gave off a subtle but very beautiful chocolately element as well. It's almost as if the heat of my body stimulated and enhanced the carob element, and this continued to radiate from my skin for quite some time afterwards.

While I have never claimed to be a big fan of jasmine, I found this massage bar incredibly beautiful - very exotic and alluring, and definitely something that fans of Lust or indeed any jasmine-orientated fragrance will probably really enjoy.

As if the smell wasn't appealing enough, the fact that this bar is one of the longer-lasting massage bars no doubt helps its popularity. I found that I was able to get a good 8-10 full body uses out of it, whereas some bars I can only heed 3-4. The fact that it's rather stubborn at releasing oils to begin with means that it's far easy to manipulate how much/little you want to use. Furthermore, it holds its shape really well so you won't have it breaking apart or turning into a gloopy mess during application, and it also means that it's rather easy to store between uses.

Neon Love/ Cupid's Love Soap

Neon Love is a new soap released as part of Lush's 2014 Valentine's Day range. Inspired by '12 months of Neon Love'; a collaborative art installation that ran for a whole year, and featured lyrics from famous love songs brightly lit up in huge neon writing, this soap is a fruity, uplifting product that'll soften your skin and leave you smelling wonderful. In 2015, the soap was released with the same design. However, this time had renamed it Cupid's Love

For starters, this soap is incredibly beautiful to look at; it's a vibrant, neon pink colour with white hearts running all the way through the soap. If you look closely, you can also make out specks of silver glitter that just gives you that extra sparkle in the shower. If you have an opportunity to visit a Lush store, I recommend that you see what the Neon Soap looks like before it has been cut into blocks, as it's rather impressive.

The main ingredients in Neon Love are Rosewood Oil, Passionfruit juice, fresh Figs and soya yoghurt. All of these smells play an integral part in the overall fragrance you get from the soap but it is the passionfruit that plays the key role. Immediately, upon sniffing Neon Love, you get the sweet, almost sour fragrance of fresh passionfruit. This is coupled with the tartness of the soya yoghurt, which is perhaps why the soap smells slightly more bitter than I was expecting.
I could not pick out the fig or cinnamon scent, however, they probably play an important role in how this soap performs in the shower. Although not the most moisturising soap I have used, it does work at making your skin feel soft and smooth. Unfortunately, it's not very effective at lathering up and you really have to massage your body quite aggressively to produce any sort of cream to clean yourself with. Additionally, the lather is rather pink so it does taint your skin a little whilst being used. However, this washes off with ease and doesn't leave you discoloured.

Whilst on paper, this soap sounded wonderful, I don't think that it's as nice as I was expecting. The scent is very one dimensional, and although it stays on your skin for a little while after use, it doesn't mature at all. While I was expecting a creamy, tropical smelling soap, Neon Love smells more like undiluted passionfruit juice; a sour scented soap with little else behind it.
For £4.25 per 100g, it's also on the more expensive side, and not really worth the price tag. Although I did enjoy how it made my skin feel, it's not one that I'd want to use all the time; I'd rather use a soap that had a more unique and full-bodied fragrance.

Jungle Solid Conditioner

I am completely baffled. Time and time again, I use Lush's solid products in the hope that I'll find something that works for me, and yet time and time again I am left frustrated and defeated. I wholeheartedly support Lush's attempt to reduce packaging waste and make their products environmentally friendly. However, if they are going to do this, surely they should be making products that can justify this switch?

Lush's Jungle Conditioner is yet another example of how me and solid hair care just do not gel. A solid bar based on fruits and cocoa butter, Jungle contains cocoa butter to give a rich condition and shine to the hair and help protect it.  It also contains fruit oils and fats to add condition and feed the hair, without making it too heavy or oily. In theory, it should leave hair nicely conditioned and easier to comb through.

On paper, it sounds as if Lush have once again created a cosmetic wonder. Yet in reality, it's a nightmarish experience. First I tried rubbing the conditioner throughout my wet hair. It pulled and ripped my hair and left clumps of stray hairs embedded in the bar, not to mention the waxy bits that decorated my scalp. Then I tried lathering it between my hands, but with little success. The stuff simply would not lather-and after five minutes of trying, I managed to lather up enough to cover about a tenth of my head.
I've read reviews online that suggest grating it down, microwaving it with water and so on. But seriously, who wants to go through all of that just to condition your hair? And if

Despite the fact that this product smells gorgeous; a tropical concoction of passion fruit, kumquat and fig, this conditioner is not practical, and will not making another appearance on my Lush shopping list.
