The Guv'ner Solid Deodorant

As I've mentioned in previous deodorant reviews, it is very rare that I have anything bad to say about Lush. Unfortunately, when I do, it's normally to do with one of their less than effective deodorants that often seem to elevate and encourage the very problems they claim to eradicate. 

The Guv'ner is the second to last deodorant from Lush that I have left to review, and as previous experience goes, this product already starts off on uneven standing. Described by the company as a 'hardworking, absorbent deodorant powder that means business', I was expecting something a little more effective than their previous offerings.

This is one of Lush's powdered products and comes in an 80g bottle, which may make it sound rather expensive when priced at £6.25. However, you only need to use a minuscule amount each time, meaning this bottle would probably last you a good six or more months. I was using it twice a day, for almost a month, and the powder barely moved a centimetre away from the top of the bottle.  

The powder is made up of a combination of different ingredients, each bringing their unique scents and properties to the mix. This list includes charcoal, sodium bicarbonate, lavender powder and calamine powder to name just a few. 

The different powders used in this are supposed to absorb sweat and soothe skin while the essential oils keep you smelling good for the whole day. Firstly, there's charcoal powder, which absorbs moisturise and eradicates smells; the lycopodium powder helps to keep the deodorant gentle on your skin, also acting as a cooling element, alongside the patchouli, to keep you feeling fresh; the sage and patchouli are there for their wonderful aroma and also for their antiseptic and astringent qualities. These latter ingredients have been proven to shrink pores, aiding towards the ultimate goal of decreased sweating!

Much like The Greeench Powdered Deodorant, applying the deodorant proved a little difficult. I tend to pour a little on the tips of my fingers and then rub it immediately under my armpits. However, despite my best efforts, I always end up spilling excess powder on my clothes or floor, so it's a little fiddly to say the least. Furthermore, it left a dark powdery layer on my armpits, which although didn't transfer onto my clothes, did leave me feeling rather conscious; it wouldn't be a product I'd be able to wear with short sleeves.

Unlike a lot of synthetic deodorants available in shops, this one is far more natural, meaning it doesn't block off the sweat glands. Although this is definitely a positive attribute, I was also aware that The Guv' ner wouldn't protect me for as long as other anti-perspirants might have done. This fact became all the more apparent when I found myself sweating profusely at work one day and became paranoid that the sweat would permeate my top and show through. However, the deodorant does act as a great repellent of smells, and despite amassing a fair bit of sweat, I couldn't detect any bad smells coming from my body.

The Guv'ner is probably one of the better smelling deodorants, a subtle blend of vetivert, patchouli, sage and lavender. It is this latter ingredient that comes through the most here, although it's a gentle scent so won't overpower any body lotion or perfume that you wish to apply.

Overall, it's far from being a terrible product; I just don't think it's suited to me. As I said in a previous review, I know I look for Lush for solutions in all of my cosmetic needs, but as of yet, they have yet to convince me that I should move away from my regular bottle of Nivea.

Supermineral Toothy Tabs

There are those products that draw you in with their vibrant design, and then there are those that remain reserved until you try them out for size. With the large selection of toothy tabs that were residing in my bathroom at the time - all waiting to be tried and reviewed - I found myself knowing very little about many of them, which set me up for some pretty big surprises when I began to use them.

Supermineral was actually one of a few bottles that I felt like leaving until the end, if only because of their rather plain demeanour and less than interesting write up. However, I vouched to myself that I would choose each of my bottles without any prior judgement in the hope that I may discover a favourite within one of the less than colourful variations.

Containing both eucalyptus and peppermint oils, these toothy tabs are definitely one that you may need a little while to adjust to at first. These tabs pack a real punch from the start and the smell of eucalyptus springs out at you the second you remove the lid.

Eucalyptus is known for being a very refreshing, herbal aroma and Supermineral showcases the ingredient perfectly. It's crisp and refreshing, with the cool note of menthol crystals underneath giving these toothy tabs a strong kick that is sure to remove any unwanted smells from the breath. Just as you would expect, these Liverpool exclusives taste just as herbal and minty in the mouth: offering a sharp but equally very clinical taste that will leave you with the cleanest feeling mouth in the world.

Interestingly, I was also able to detect the most subtlest taste of lime on my tongue afterwards. Having said that, this was only because I had been looking for the ingredient specifically, knowing that there was lime oil included in the ingredients list. What I will say is that these toothy tabs are for those who want a flavour that is going to replicate the 'blast' that a regular mint tooth paste offers.

As with all of Lush's new toothy tabs, these particular tabs feature a number of ingredients that I was unsure about and had to research before trying them out for myself - not only to understand how and why Supermineral work, but also to educate others about the benefits they possess. Firstly, these tabs feature  dicalcium phosphate anhydrous - the main component used to help supplement the body's calcium intake, not to mention preventing the build up of tartar in the mouth. Sorbitol is also used - a natural alternative to sugar which allows Lush to add flavour to this product without adding anything that'll rot your teeth; Lauroyl Sarcosine not only helps the product to foam up in the mouth, but is also used to remove unwanted bacteria that may cause problems in the future.

What I liked about Supermineral was that my mouth felt really clean after using one of these and my teeth felt smooth and shiny to the touch. In fact, I couldn't stop running my tongue along my teeth for quite a while after I had finished brushing, which is not something I have done for every toothy tab I have used.

As an alternative to toothpaste, these tabs are great, with Supermineral being a good choice of flavours to introduce somebody new to the naked concept of brushing teeth. However, I wouldn't say that they're a personal favourite of mine by any means so I shall continue to work my way through all of the variations find my match.

Bubblegum Toothy Tabs

I don't think anyone was at all surprised to learnt that Lush decided to release a Snow Fairy scented/tasting toothy tab. It was only a matter of time before the popular fragrance was incorporated into something that consumers could actually put in their mouth and almost class as 'edible.' It doesn't come as any surprise either that the tabs are sporting a playful shade of pink. 

As one of Lush's biggest selling shower gels, it makes complete sense that the company would have a go at bringing out the idea in as many formats as possible. Fast forward then to Bubblegum: one of ten limited edition toothy tabs that recently arrived on the shelves as exclusives for the Liverpool store.

Described as 'a candy floss flavoured treat', these limited edition tabs feature the amazing ingredient, marshmallow root, which adds a gorgeous sweet and delicious fragrance to many of Lush's other scrumptious aromas. In the case of these toothy tabs, they do an amazing job at not only replicating the smell of Snow Fairy perfectly, but they also help to create a taste that couldn't be any closer to what fans have probably always envisaged their favourite smell to taste like.

From the bottle, the sweet and playful notes of candy floss and raspberry bubblegum jump straight out and up your nose. After sniffing my pot for almost ten minutes, and then comparing it to the small bottle of the shower gel that I still have, I honestly couldn't tell any difference between the two besides from the fact that Bubblegum Toothy Tabs appeared a little powdery to my nose.

When in use, these exclusive tabs created a sweet and gently musky taste that tasted very much like the smell of Snow Fairy. It's an odd way of describing a taste, but those who have the fortunate of trying them out for themselves will no doubt understand what I mean when I say that they taste how the classic scent smells. 

As with most of Lush's other toothy tabs, Bubblegum contain a number of ingredients that work in the same way as regular toothpaste does: dicalcium phosphate anhydrous is the main ingredient in these toothy tabs and is a component used to help supplement the body's calcium intake, not to mention preventing the build up of tartar in the mouth; sorbitol is a natural alternative to sugar, which allows Lush to add flavour to this product without adding anything that'll rot your teeth; Lauroyl Sarcosine not only helps the product to foam up in the mouth but is also used to remove unwanted bacteria that may cause problems in the future.

To use them you simply pop a tab into your mouth, crunch down using your front teeth, wet your toothbrush and begin to brush your teeth as normal. The powdery mixture reacts with the water and the cream of tartar creates a foam that freshens your mouth and cleans away any stubborn pieces of food that may be lingering around. Unlike some of Lush's other tabs I have tried, this one melts almost immediately upon contact with moisture and you won't need to crunch these at all.

What I liked about these tabs was that they produced a rather generous foam when in use, and even when I rinsed my mouth out halfway through, I was still able to stimulate a lot more foam when beginning to brush my teeth again. I found that I could continue brushing my teeth for a good 5 minutes without running out of product and they left my mouth feeling thoroughly clean afterwards. It was just a shame that the taste of these was very mild and therefore the impact they had in my mouth was equally as disappointing.

While these tabs won't leave you with amazingly minty-fresh breath, and this may be something you'll have to get used to, it does leave a pleasant but very gentle taste for a short while afterwards. For those who dislike the heavy taste that mint can leave in your mouth, these would be a great alternative as they'll leave your teeth feeling clean without leaving much of a taste in your mouth afterwards. 

I was actually really impressed to find that the 'taste of Snow Fairy' stayed with me for a good couple of hours after I have initially brushed my teeth. During this time, my mouth felt and tasted super clean and I was confident that my breath was also gently sweet and fruity. Had I eaten within that time, I'm sure that the taste would have dispersed far quicker. However, it goes to show that the effects of these tabs last for quite an impressive amount of time.

Usually I opt for the toothy tabs that have a little more bite. There is something I quite enjoy about using a toothpaste or mouthwash that feels as if I have  burnt my mouth free of any living bacteria. However, these were really pleasant and make a great alternative to those more potent toothy tabs. I'm actually really grateful that Lush have decided to release these.

Gin And Tonic Mouthwash Tabs

Boy oh boy oh boy! If there is one thing I have learned from the many mouthwashes that I have experienced over the years, it's that some of them can feel as if they're ripping the very skin off the top of your mouth! The lengths that some people will go to to have the cleanest mouths is truly inspiring, and definitely not something that I aspire to follow.

Yet when I tried Gin And Tonic Mouthwash Tabs for the first time, this is exactly what I experienced. Its safe to say that if you're someone who doesn't enjoy feeling as if your mouth is on fire, I would probably avoid these like the plague. These little blue tabs mean absolute business and are certainly a godsend when you have some truly potent-smelling garlic breath you wish to eradicate. 

As I haven't drunk alcohol in any shape or matter for a number of years, I cannot remember the potency of an ice cold Gin And Tonic. However, I'm fairly certain that the after taste of said drink is not as strong as these little tabs, which contain an interesting collaboration of juniperberry, coriander, lime and angelica root oils, to give this mouthwash it's very unique flavour.

As soon as you grind one of these between your teeth and add the water to rinse, you can already taste the amalgamation of flavours coming together in unison. Gin And Tonic is like a intense blend of herbal notes mixed with a powerful current of mental crystals, blended up to create something rather potent yet not at all mint like.

During the swishing process, you cannot really gage much of the taste at all, only that your mouth is beginning to feel rather clean and refreshing in the process. However, as soon as you spilt the mouthwash out, the intense herbal combination fills your mouth and tongue with a strong, robust but rather impressive fresh taste. If you want your mouth to feel brand new, these are definitely a mouthwash tab you'll want to try out for yourself.

For those who have never used a mouthwash tab before, you simply crunch the tab between your teeth (I prefer to do this with my front teeth), take a slurp of water and begin swishing as you would a bottled mouthwash. Once you've finished, you spit the water into the sink and you're ready to brace the rest of the day without worrying about smelly breath, or the food from your lunch remaining stuck between your teeth. Lush recommend that you keep the mouthwash swishing around your mouth for a good minute before spitting it out, as this allows the ingredients to get to work at cleaning the mouth and deodorising the tongue so you get the maximum results possible.

As you would expect from Lush, the ingredients that have gone into making Gin And Tonic have also been carefully crafted and serve a purpose. Firstly, they  contain sodium bicarbonate, which is a natural softening ingredient that is also known for its ability to clean and deodorise at the same time. This is a key component that will help to clean your tongue, gums and teeth when you're swishing, and will help to rid your mouth of any strong odours that might be present at the time, freshening your breath in the process.

Each of the mouthwashes also contains xylitol, a natural substance that is found in certain fruits and vegetables and is used in foods and cosmetics as a refined sweetener. This ingredient has been proven to cause none of the harmful effects that sugar can have on the teeth; is perfect for diabetics as it doesn't effect blood sugar levels at all; yet offers the sweetness to help give these tabs their interesting but enjoyable flavours.

Whether you're popping out for a day at the beach; making a weekend trip to see the family; or jet-setting off to somewhere exciting, these 45g bottles can be tucked away with the assurance that you wont arrive at your destination with either soggy luggage, or with the lingering smells of your breakfast still festering on your tongue. Furthermore, they're also alcohol-free so these beauties wont cause you any issues when you're going through customs. No matter the length of your journey, these are handy to use at any time of the day: before you head out on your adventure; after a meal; or anytime you feel you need a little freshen up.

While I wouldn't say that Gin And Tonic possesses a flavour I particularly enjoy, I cannot fault how clean and crisp my mouth feels afterwards, and the effects of these last for hours after they've been used. I have found myself gravitating towards these more and more as of late, and this tells me that firmly making their way into my daily routine.

Crash Shower Jelly

I had to indulge myself in a little giggle when hearing about this product for the first time, as it made me realise just how old I seem to be getting. When discovering that this shower jelly was called Crash and had been designed as part of Lush's 'party products', most young, active adults would probably associate the name with that of breaking into a party to have some unadulterated fun. However, when I heard the name for the first time, I imagined most likely what I'd be doing on the sofa by about 7pm before the party had even started. Where has my youth gone?

One of four limited edition 'party products', Crash Shower Jelly is a Liverpool exclusive held only for consumers who want to book a party experience within the store. Alongside Calm A Llama Bath Bomb, Cilla The Caterpillar Bath Bomb and Party Balloon Reusable Bubble Bar, this exclusive offers a classic scent for fans to indulge in during their birthday celebrations, although Lush was kind enough to unleash a limited number online for consumers to get their hands on.

Sharing its scent with the rather extensive Snow Showers and Celebrate range, this shower jelly will appeal to those fans old and new. Featuring sweet orange, lime and cognac oils, this fluorescent yellow product offers an equally vibrant fragrance that is perfect for the summer months ahead of us.

Originally described as replicating the sweet, fizziness of champagne, the smell of Crash Shower Jelly is a super fruity, bright and very beautiful grape-like aroma. All three components are sweet and zesty, yet equally as light and refreshing as well. If you were a fan of Bubbly Shower Gel or Buck's Fizz Body Conditioner, this jelly is very much like these, albeit a little more spritzy and a little more led by the lime as opposed to the orange. 

While far from being a complex scent, there is something so satisfying and incredibly beautiful about this aroma, and would definitely be the perfect 'wake up call' after a heavy night partying. It might even be acceptable to use this after a heavy night's sleep on the sofa as well, but I wouldn't know anything about this of course...

There are several ways that you can use any of Lush's shower jellies and I find that everyone has their own preference, which is completely understandable. Firstly, you can break a small piece of (or select a piece that's been segmented prior to your shower) and rub the block directly onto your skin. The amount of lather this creates differentiates vastly depending on the type of jelly, how old the product is and the size of the piece you're using. While some users find this way works for them, I find that this is fairly ineffective as it does not create much of a lather and the jelly becomes too wet, making it slippery and difficult to hold on to. 

Secondly, you can use a shower sponge, puff or exfoliating glove to create a lather before rubbing it all over your body. For me, I found this method far more successful as it helped to break down the jelly properly and create a nice foamy effect to wash your body with. Finally, you can break off slabs of the jelly and use them as you would a bubble bar, placing them underneath a running tap to stimulate bubbles. I tend to use mine for this as well at times, as I can get 4-5 amazing baths out of one 100g tub, which I consider to be great value for money.

In terms of Crash, I was pleased to find that the hot water did nothing but stimulate all of the juiciness of the fragrance and make for an uplifting and very refreshing experience. This is the perfect jelly to use in the mornings as this product will certainly bat away the cobwebs and awaken your senses.

Alongside this, I found that the shower jelly was super moisturising, and I could feel the skin-softening effects immediately after I lathered it over my skin. While remnants of this didn't linger long on my skin after I had towelled myself down, I was really impressed by how much the shower jelly impacted on the room for hours after use. My 100g tub has barely left the bathroom since I began using it last month and I think this is a large improvement on the plain-looking Snow Showers that originally came out back in the day.

Frangipani Glove Hand Serum

If there is one part of my body that suffers the most, it is my hands. Having to endure seven days of hard grafting at work, as well as then having to lift increasingly heavy weights seven days a week at the gym, my poor little mitts are just about done by the end of the day. Endless pots and tubes of hand creams later and the skin on my palms is still as cracked and as weathered as an old house. It would have to take something miraculously to bleed some life back into these tired hands.

Bring forth Frangipani Glove Hand Serum: a product that certainly didn't inspire me to get that excited when Lush first announced that it was coming out. Even when the oval shaped disc of oils and butters appeared on my doorstep, I still wasn't interested enough to start using it right away. Silly really, given that the results it did heed now leave me wishing I'd bought a hundred more before they disappeared from the website. 

Described as a hand serum, Frangipani is ultimately a little like a massage bar for the hands, and works in a slightly different way to that of a cream. With quite a number of hand creams, you often need to massage the product quite rigorously into your skin and then wait for it to fully absorb before you can carry on about your day. This hand serum works a little differently, and is ultimately more successful.

You only need to massage for a split second between your palms for the product to begin melting and heed enough oils for you to use on your skin. Frangipani melts extremely easily so I would recommend that you store it somewhere cool in between uses, and try not to hold it too long either, as the bar will shrink far quicker than you would want it to.

Once the product is on the skin, you simply need to spread the oils out across every area of your skin and the work has been done. Instead of the oily, greasy feel that you may experience with creams and lotions, this hand serum dries into a powdered finish so you can get back into whatever it was you were doing mere seconds before you applied the serum. 

What is amazing about Frangipani is that I was not expecting the product to make that much of an impression on my skin, and I instead found that my hands felt instantly hydrated, smooth and far more moisturised after only a matter of seconds. Before and after my gym sessions, I have been applying this hand serum religiously, and have found that I rarely develop any areas of dry skin, whereas beforehand I would have areas that felt constantly dry and hard, no matter how hard I tried to rectify this.

After using this daily for a couple of weeks, I also found that the areas around my nails, as well as the cuticles themselves, were far softer and smoother, and I had less 'flaking' of skin as I had done previously. Featuring almond milk and castor oil to help form a protective barrier across my skin, and witch hazel extract to soothe and tone, this limited edition is definitely a miracle in my eyes. 

Fragrance wise, Lush describe this as being rather fruity, with both sandalwood and tuberose underneath to add both woody and floral tones. To my nose, I'd describe the scent of this to be more on the warming but gentle floral side, although I do agree that there is something delicately woody about the aroma as well.

Although I didn't find that the fragrance of Frangipani lasted all too long on my hands, the intensity of which it improved the condition on my skin, and in such a short space of time, means that this is a product I have integrated into my regular routine. Carrying it around in one of Lush's silver tins has been a godsend for me whilst at work, and I've also taken it with me on board a couple of plane rides, where I've used it as a facial serum as well, with positive results.  

Having used my bar consistently, multiple times a day for almost a month, I can safely say that a bar of this hand serum will easily last another couple of months, making this great value for money. In my opinion, this is easily the greatest hand product that Lush have ever made and I only hope it becomes a permanent in the near future. This is one that I will definitely buy again.

Dear John Coffee Shampoo Bar

With the amount of new hair care coming out from Lush, it can be very daunting for fans to know what to invest in, and which ones to avoid altogether. As quickly as they arrive, my hair becomes the testing ground for these new products, which often leaves my locks feeling rather confused and in despair.

After numerous new conditioners and protein shampoos, Dear John Coffee Shampoo Bar came along and completely blew each and every one of them out of the water. This is easily the best shampoo bar that Lush have EVER done. Yes, you heard that right! And if you're not convinced what makes this one shine, please continue reading to find out. 

Firstly, the smell of this bar is simply delicious. If you enjoy Cup O' Coffee Body Mask, you'll love the rich and smoky coffee scent that this limited edition brings to the table. As others have mentioned before me, there is also something slightly woody about the fragrance of this that reminds me a little of Dear John as well.

Having said that, if you're not a fan of coffee, you may be pleased to know that the scent of this doesn't really seem to make itself known when it's being used in the shower. Strangely, despite the robust smell when its dry; when it's wet, the smell almost evaporates a little. If you're worried that the coffee will permeate your locks and leave a smell that follows you around, you may be pleased to know that the aroma all but dissipates when the shampoo is washed out. 

What the inclusion of both the coffee beans and the caffeine powder does do however, is stimulate the scalp and promote healthy growth. If you're like me, that suffers from both rather thin hair, or hair that doesn't seem to want to grow as fast as others do, this shampoo bar will work wonders at helping this process to speed up a little. While it's probably more wishful thinking than actual progress, my hair genuinely feels a little longer since I began using this about 10 days ago.

What I will say is that Dear John Coffee Shampoo Bar lathers up really generously, so you barely need to stimulate it between your hands before you have enough to massage into your hair and scalp. Once you have done this, leaving it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing it away will work wonders at cleaning your whole head of hair.

After using this only once, I was amazed when I noticed how soft my hair felt before I applied my conditioner. I find that a lot of shampoos tends to rely on the conditioning aspect of your routine, to retain that moisture. However, I can safely say that this limited edition could easily be used by itself, and still heed impressive results.

While my hair was drying, I noticed how much softer my locks felt; how much more shine my hair had on offer; and even how much thicker it looked and felt after I had brushed out any tangles. While my ends were still a little frizzy, the rest of my hair sat beautifully down my back, and it's the first time in a long while that I was able to wear my hair down without needing to apply an oil.

Ultimately, I do think that it's a little strange that one of Lush's best ever shampoos has been released only as a limited edition. And it's a shame that it has received less coverage than these other products because of this fact. In my mind, Dear John Coffee Shampoo Bar is my favourite shampoo from Lush, and coupled with the recently released American Cream Pressed Conditioner, makes my hair look and feel like gorgeous.

American Cream Pressed Conditioner

So lost have I been with the excessive amount of new products coming out across the globe, I wasn't even aware that Lush had brought out a vegan version of American Cream Conditioner until I saw it plastered all across instagram. While perhaps not the format I would have liked it to have been in, I was still really excited to give this one a go. 

What I noticed when it first arrived was that the scent was slightly removed from the regular American Cream that we all know and love. To my nose, there was still the wonderfully warm and mildly fruity presence of the strawberry; coupled with the vanilla absolute to give it the 'milkshake' fragrance that this aroma is famous for. 

However, I immediately noticed that the presence of the clary sage was far more dominant than it has been in perhaps any of the other variations that Lush have released over the years. There is something more herbal about the smell that this conditioner bar radiates, and I can imagine that this fact may upset a few loyal fans. 

Yet, I happened to really appreciate this change. With one bath bomb, two shower gels and two body conditioners released with this scent over the last few months, it was a pleasant change to try something a little different. Ultimately though, the scent was the least of my worries; how it performed on my hair would be the ultimate test of its worth.

For those who have never used a solid conditioner from Lush before, you need to understand that the bar won't lather like a shampoo disc will. In fact, when you're using this in your hair, you may even think that it isn't working due to how little 'product' you can see being transferred, and this may tempt you to revert back to a liquid conditioner as a back up plan.

What I will say is that this bar doesn't release a lot of lather at all, and it's not a product that you can really feel in your hair once it's been applied. However, I can vouch from experience when I say that the results you will heed are incredible. A little bit of faith goes a long way...

I found that the best way to use this bar is to rub it between my wet hands first, where you'll find that American Cream Pressed Conditioner will release, what I can only describe as, a thin cream-like gel. This can then be massaged into your locks, starting with the ends and working your way upwards. Less is definitely more in this case, and I can tell you now that you won't feel the presence of this once its been applied. However, rest assure that it is working and doing its job.

Once I had left the conditioner on for a few minutes, I rinsed my hair under the shower hose and set about letting it dry naturally. Firstly, what I found was that my hair was suddenly far more manageable  Although still heavily frizzy by nature, my hair sat in a way that felt more controlled, which doesn't happen very often with my hair.

Secondly, I found that my natural highlights were a little more intensified and there was a wonderful shine to the outside of my hair. My hair also happened to feel really soft and smooth, and appeared in much better condition than it had been before. Finally, the curls that usually sit around the crown of my head, and make it look like I have permanent devil horns, seemed to settle after using this conditioner only once. To me, I could see an improvement within minutes.

What I will say about this pressed conditioner is that it certainly doesn't leave a wonderful scent on your hair afterwards. Unlike the non-vegan liquid counterpart, this one left all but nothing in the way of smell afterwards, which is not a problem for me but may be a priority for others. 

After using this three times already, I can safely say that the small little bar is going to last me a lot longer than the liquid conditioner would do, if I was able to use it. This is definitely an amazing introduction into possible future hair care items from Lush, and I'm super excited to see if more pressed conditioners, like this one, make into stores real soon.
