First of all I should probably state that I have absolutely no reason at all to feel disgruntled by Lush as a whole. Their commitment to veganism, and the amass of items that they've released over the last few years, have surpassed that of any other company that I know of. However, I nearly always feel slightly miffed when a new product comes out containing honey or beeswax.
When Hunny Bear Massage Bar first made itself known last Mother's Day, I was slightly miffed that I wouldn't be able to try it out for myself. Smothering my body in something that would make me smell like a human dessert is my idea of heaven, and the fact that I'd only be able to observe this one from a distance, much like Scrubee, was a little disappointing.
Finding out that Lush had removed the honey from the ingredients list this year, and veganised the seasonal massage bar, made me super excited to try it out. In fact, no sooner had it arrived through my door, my skin was already being treated to a full body massage.
Sharing its scent with the Sea Salted Caramel Soap, Hunny Bear smells like a rich caramel pudding, laced with a generous sprinkling of brown sugar and a fresh drizzle of vanilla custard to finish. It is a delicious, sticky sweet smell: one where you can envisage the brown sugar gently bubbling under the heat on the stove, while a warm caramel sauce wraps itself around the fresh vanilla ice cream and melts it into a sickly sweet mess.
What is interesting is that when you first apply this massage bar to your skin, the vetivert is quite heavy in the mix. Therefore, you will find that there is an overpowering smoky smell that lingers around for a matter of minutes. However, once the oils begin to settle into the skin, this note disperses somewhat and the other key ingredients begin to make the fragrance more rounded and more delicious.
What I loved about Hunny Bear was that the bar was super easy to massage across the skin, and while very easy to melt, it wasn't too much of a problem to apply as much (or as little) as I wanted to use. Once the butters and oils had melted across a surface, I then used my hand to really massage the oils into the skin properly so that they were absorbed as quickly as possible.
As the name suggests, the sole intention of these bars is to replace the liquid oils that someone may use when giving a massage. The consistency of nearly all of Lush's massage bars means that you get the same results, just without having to rely on a product that comes with packaging.
However, if like me, you don't always have someone to give you a massage, you can also use these bars in replacement of your regular body lotion. Although there is a difference: these solid bars are definitely more oily than a lotion or cream, they offer your skin a chance to absorb some good quality butters and oils, without anything else featured that may clog up your pores.
When using Hunny Bear, I did find that the oils and butters took a short while to absorb into the skin, so you'll need to allow the product at least ten minutes to settle before putting any clothes over the top. However, I found that my skin looked and felt instantly more nourished and soft, and this lasted for the most part of the day.
Scent-wise, the wonderfully sweet aroma also remained present on my skin for a good while, and I did receive a few comments during my day at work about my 'perfume', so it does hold longevity. Pairing this with perhaps Yog Nog or Butterball Liquid Perfume would only serve to intensify this wonderful foodie experience for longer, although there may be people compelled to lick you as you will smell simply divine.
Overall, I am really happy that Lush have veganised this, without seemingly losing any of the skin-softening properties that the original massage bar held. This is definitely one I will be buying a few more of, before the Mother's Day range disappears for another year.

What's not to love about a banana? Funnily enough, for years I opted out of eating bananas in favour of other fruits, only to fall back in love with the big yellow gem when I began training solidly at the gym. There is something so unique about the flavour and texture of this fruit, that I simply couldn't imagine not eating them to the extent that I now do.
When I first discovered that Lush were going to bring out a massage bar called Big Banana, I was really excited to find out how close in scent it was to the fruit itself. Brushing over the cheeky connotations that came up alongside this release, I was super excited to try something that I was told had a similar scent to the Sticky Banana Soap - a product that I'd previously been unable to try due to the inclusion of honey in the ingredients list.
What I found when my massage bar arrived was that the smell was nothing like I was expecting it to be. As opposed to the sweet, natural banana fragrance I was expecting, I instead found something that almost smelt like a combination of banana and blue bubblegum ice cream. Don't get me wrong, the scent of this is in no way synthetic smelling, and there is no way I'd describe it as being at all playful or childlike. However, I think the inclusion of the clove bud oil was a little too domineering, which pushed the other components to the side and created an odd overall aroma.
There is definitely a creaminess about this, hence my ice cream comparison, but there is also something rather prominent about the clove which takes away from the smooth, velvety smell that this massage bar could have offered the consumers. Luckily, the clove does tend to disperse a little when massaged across the skin, and there is something quite sultry about the fruity side of this massage bar that comes out more when in contact with the warmth of your body.
As with all of Lush's massage bars, the idea behind this is to use this in replacement of a bottle of massage oil: either gliding this directly across the skin, or massaging between your palms and then using your hands to direct the oils where you'd like them to go. If, like me, your partner doesn't particularly enjoy giving massages, you can also use this bar in replacement of a body lotion, and if will offer similar results when it comes to moisturising your skin.
As far as usability is concerned, Big Banana did melt with ease across my skin, and I found that I didn't need to hold it for long before I had enough oils to work with. These absorbed really quickly into the skin and I was able to put my clothes back on within ten minutes of application. This was especially great after my morning gym session, as I was able to nourish my skin for the whole day, and not have to wait around until I could head into work.
When using it like this, across my whole body, on a daily basis, I was able to stretch the use of this to a little over two months. This makes it great value for money when compared to a pot of body lotion that would probably last a similar amount of time. While not as intense as a body lotion, Big Banana was suffice at keeping my skin looking and feeling really smooth and replenished, and I barely had to reach for a lotion to intensify my experience.
Having said that, I did find the shape of banana to be a little tricky when trying to apply the oils, and once the massage bar started to shrink in size, it did become a little more difficult to hold the product while it was in use. However, I really appreciated that I was able to use the tip of the banana to stimulate certain muscle areas that were aching after my workouts: something I wouldn't have been able to do with other shaped bars.
Overall, I enjoyed using Big Banana for the short time it graced the shelves of Lush, although I would have appreciated a fragrance that wasn't so heavily doused in clove. While it can be a little oily if too much of the bar is melted at once, it's very easy to apply and leaves your skin feeling lovely and soft afterwards. The only thing that I would say this limited edition is not so good at is penetrating the driest areas, such as the bottom of your feet and your hands, so you may wish to use something else to improve the condition of those parts.

With the release of the million body lotions not to long ago in the Lush Kitchen, I'm sure that most Lush fans have more than stocked up on their skin care, which is why this little fella might have been lost a little in the stampede to purchase those exclusives. Even I completely forgot about its existence until very recently, and now I only wish I had discovered it sooner.
Holly Berry is a brand new massage bar in the Christmas range this year. While it's minutely smaller than your average regular bar, it's definitely worth an investment, if only for the fragrance alone.
Containing bergamot, buchu and tangerine oils, this limited edition produces a wonderfully sweet and super fruity aroma. To my nose this smells like a glass of fresh tangerine and mango smoothie, blended up together and made into a solid bar. You get the citrus element of the tangerine but the mango softens this a little and adds its own syrupy goodness. It's very bright and beautiful, yet I would also describe the aroma as being very wholesome as well.
What was interesting about Holly Berry was the fact that there was an element of blackcurrant in the aroma as well, which comes from the inclusion of the buchu oil. However, I didn't really notice it all that much until I had massaged the bar across my body, and then these sweet currant notes came forth with the warmth of my skin.
This massage bar glides with ease over the body and leaves a thin, greasy blend of oils to be absorbed into the skin. You don't need to apply much pressure to Holly Berry as it's a very generous bar, melting with ease with the warmth of your skin. In fact, I would be wary of holding this for too long as it does tend to melt instantaneously, and you'll end up with too much oil to contend with. Once you've run this bar across the areas you want moisturising, you can spread the oils and allow them to absorb into the skin. I found that this particular massage bar didn't stay on the skin for too long, and I was able to put my clothes back under ten minutes after initial application.
Yet, despite the speed in which this massage bar seemingly disappeared from my skin, I was left was beautifully soft skin that had a slight radiance to it as well. While I didn't feel as if this massage bar was as intensive as other variations, I did enjoy the light touch in which is worked across my whole body.
My only issue with this bar was the fact that the fragrance wasn't as strong as it could have been. This is not the sort of product that you'll be able to smell when walking into a room, or one that you can make out until you hold the thing against your nose. On my skin, the fragrance also faded rather quickly, and I found myself reusing it a couple of hours later, just to get a hit of the scent.
Lush would do well to release this scent in other formats. While nowhere original or unique, there is something about this combination that I enjoyed very much. As I mentioned above, this is a massage bar suited for those who want a light moisturise as opposed to a heavy, greasy experience. Strangely enough, I would say the scent and productivity of this bar would be more suited for the warmer months of the year, but I still appreciated this a lot as a quick 'pick me up.'
While not a massage bar I would shout from the roof tops about, I really enjoyed using this one and will continue to do so for another couple of months before Holly Berry melts away to nothing. A lovely little present for your partner, if you want to offer them the promise of a massage, and an equally good replacement for a body lotion as well.

During my attendance of the Lush Summit event last year, I stumbled upon a demo table that immediately captivated my full attention. The display explained that Lush were soon to bring out a brand new spa treatment completely centred about the Karma fragrance, and my tongue couldn't help but lol out of my mouth while I listened on with glee.
Before leaving, I noticed that the table had a single Karma Massage Bar for fans to demo: a little taste of what you could experience if you were lucky enough to book in for the full treatment upon its release. As I left the stall and headed around the rest of the displays, I couldn't help but wonder how complete my life would feel if I could get my hands on one of those magical massage bars myself.
Fast forward almost a year, and the Lush Kitchen answered my prayers: bringing out the bar as a limited edition release for us all to buy: yet another taster that drew us Karma obsessives in. After using the bar for a straight two weeks, I began wishing I had bought a few more to hold stock until they came back again. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that this dream will ever come true.
While rather plain to look at, Karma Massage Bar smells exactly as you would want and expect it to be. Oozing with patchouli and sweet orange oil, this limited edition offers a delicately fruity but equally as spicy affair. As with most products in the Karma range, this one sends out vibes of the swinging sixties: it's sultry and sexy, yet naughty and fruity at the same time.
The lemongrass and pine oil yet again revel under the surface: offering short bursts of green without being overly generous. Lush describe it will by stating that Karma 'evokes memories of summer and the heat and spice of India', and you only need to give this bar a sniff to know that this is the perfect description to match the wonderful fragrance.
What I loved about this massage bar was that it was super easy to melt - running over my skin and leaving a delicate layer of oils to massage across my body. The cocoa and shea butters really get to work at softening and hydrating your skin, whilst the orange oil has a radiance and a shine that stays with you as the oils are sinking into your skin.
While some Karma-scented products can be rather powdery, this one was a little more sultry: a little closer to the soap than it is to the perfume. It's perhaps a slightly more reserved than the perfume, but I think that's what makes it truly special in this format.
As with most massage bars, this can last a long time, depending on how you use it. While I went a little crazy and used it for a couple of weeks straight, this is best used as either - as the name suggests - a tool during a full body massage, or as an intense moisturiser a couple of times a week. As the latter, this bar can last upwards of three to four months - making it great value for money in my eyes.

I am class myself as a Twilight fanatic, even if I’m not anywhere near as vocal about it as a lot of people are. While I don’t hamper a craving for the scent all that often, there are times when quite literally nothing else do. I honestly think I would genuinely feel a little sad if I ever ran out of the shower gel, which is why I can only hope that it makes an appearance at some point this year.
In an attempt to step away from package-wrapped cosmetics, Lush used the Christmas range last year to showcase many innovative products that embodied their new naked initiative. Twilight Sparkle Box was one of two limited edition products that saw Lush attempting to combine a solid massage bar with a dusting powder.
Made from a variety of different oils and butters, the outer layer of the sparkle box works in the same way that a massage bar does. Upon contact with the warmth of your body, the box begins to melt slowly and leaves a layer of oily residue on your skin. You can then massage these oils across your body in the same way you would a body lotion. The difference between a cream and the pure oils you get in a massage bar is that the latter is far more nourishing. So if like me you have very dry skin, this will replenish that missing moisture and leave your skin looking and feeling much more hydrated. After using any of Lush’s massage bars, I notice that my skin appears much plumper and feels far suppler
Contain an amalgamation of different butters and oils, the sparkle jars firstly work as massage bars. Simply massage them across your body and the heat will gently melt a thin layer away to moisturise and nourish your skin. I found that this one was a little stubborn to use at first, and I would recommend that you use it immediately after a shower or bath, as the heat will help the jar to be a little less stubborn when releasing those oils. If used when you’re cold, you could find that the product will leave sticky streaks across your skin, and you may need to rinse yourself and start again.
As well as a massage bar, this product contains a filling of dusting powder - which should be used after you’ve applied the oils, to soften your skin further and leave a layer of sparkle to your skin. Although my picture shows that I severed the lid off to access the powder, you are supposed to pierce the two holes in the top and then sprinkle it into your skin.
If using Twilight Sparkle Jar, you need to be aware of two important things. Firstly, the massage bar is technically hollow inside, so you cannot apply as much pressure as you might normally do with a regular massage bar. In addition, you may want to keep your eye on how much powder you have left inside (the more you use the jar), as if the outer layer thins too much after, you could end up with a messy spillage.
Secondly, the dusting power will leave a faint purple ‘glow’ across the areas of skin that you apply it to, and there will be a shimmer of silver lustre as well. For this reason, I would think carefully about when and how you’re using the sparkle jar, as this probably wouldn’t be very appropriate to use all of the time. Having said that, I’m sure that most people who choose to use this, will probably have made me peace with both of these ideas beforehand.
While this is definitely a lovely novel idea for the seasonal period - especially as a stocking filler - this is definitely not something that I can ever see becoming a permanent member of the range. Twilight fans will no doubt be pleased with another product in their favourite aroma. However, I'd choose a dosage of the shower gel over this any day.

As a newfound traveller, I've developed a new perspective on the worthiness of certain cosmetics, and how you have to adapt your routines to match the places you visit and the lifestyle you lead. Having spent the last four months in very hot places, I have come to realise that body lotions are not the most effective way of replenishing your skin. Not only are they rather sticky in humid heat, and make you feel like you need a shower directly after using one, but they also pose the threat of leaking across the minimal clothing you're living in for the next few weeks.
While you need to think about storage when you're somewhere hot, massage bars are the perfect travelling companions: fitting in the smallest spaces of your luggage and offering an intense moisturising session for your parched skin, after a day on the beach.
When I first sniffed Melt My Heart Massage Bar, I knew that this one would be coming with me on my next adventure - that is if the bar lasts from all of the times I've already used it so far! While not a direct replica, this Valentine's Day special shares its scent with the Jungle family - offering a strange, alluring and rather unique fragrance unlike anything else you've tried before.
All of the Jungle range can be described as possessing a strange, slightly soured fruity smell, coupled with an almost pine-like aroma alongside this. There is also a woody element underneath with a gentle earthy twang that grounds the soured fruity note a little and gives this fragrance slightly green-like qualities as well.
In all fairness, this is probably the hardest scent to describe from Lush and it's one you have to experience for yourself, to decide whether or not you like it. This smell is definitely an acquired taste, and I find that people either love it or hate it. As I am in the former catergory, I couldn't wait to try this out on my skin.
Priced up at £4.95, this is one of the cheapest massage bars on offer, and the size of it makes it one of the better value ones as well. Although a little thinner than some of Lush's regular bars, this is two thirds of the price, and therefore one that is worth stocking up on if you feel it works well for you.
As with all of my massage bars, I tend to use this as an intense moisturising session once or twice a week. Using this every day would probably make your skin rather greasy, and it would prove far more expensive than a lotion if you were to use it in this way.
Simply massage the bar across the skin - I tend to do so in a circular motion - and then use the palms of your hands to spread the oils and butters across the whole area. As the weather is warming up a little in the UK, I would not recommend that you hold this for too long as I found that it began to melt within seconds of contacting the heat from my body. Furthermore, massaging it between your hands and then applying it onto your skin yourself actually ensures that you don't use too much, thus extending the life of the product.
As with most of Lush's massage bars, your skin is left slightly oily for a short time afterwards and I would recommend leaving it for 5-10 minutes before putting any clothes over the top. However, after this time your skin will look bright and radiant, and feel super nourished and supple. After using this a single time, I found that it completely eradicated some of the dry areas I had developed through peeling.
As to be expected, the scent lingers on your skin for a good hour or more after application, and the effects of the massage bar will last you through the entire day and into the night as well.
While you can use this in the same manner as I did, you also have the option of giving or receiving a massage from/for someone you love, and I'm sure Melt My Heart would be even more magical if used in this way. As my partner is away travelling for the next few weeks, I have to resign to using this on myself - which isn't the most romantic of options, but certainly leaves my skin feeling good enough to celebrate.

As far as ideas go, this new concept is definitely very sweet and quirky, but I’d definitely say it’s more suited as a seasonal gift as opposed to a staple item in your collection. Only time will tell whether or not these jars will leave a lasting impression on Lush fans, although I can imagine this is not the last we will see of them...
Snow Fairy Sparkle Jar is one of two limited edition 'naked boxes' to make themselves known this Christmas. While brand new to the seasonal range, neither of them offer new scents - with this one, not surprisingly, sharing its scent with the popular Snow Fairy Range.
With an astonishing number of new products released in the scent this year, Snow Fairy fans are being spoiled rotten with their sweet, musky seasonal favourite. While this jar is reminiscent of the numerous products in this fragrance, I really liked the fact that this one was a little more powdery and a little less sickly-sweet than the shower gel. Snow Fairy Sparkle Jar is probably closer to Candy Fluff and the Liquid Perfume than anything: it’s a little more reserved and thus more exquisite because of this.

Another aspect that will prevent me from buying another is that I don’t find my skin particularly benefits from the butters and oils, anywhere near to the same standard as a regular massage bar. This is definitely more about the novelty than the nourishment of the skin - something I need to ensure does happen during the colder months.
Ultimately, I love that Lush are trying out new ideas, and this will prove really popular throughout the seasonal months. Snow Fairy fans will appreciate a new product to try their hands at, and handfuls of these will find themselves as gifts for certain. However, I will continue to use my Sparkle Jar every now and then, but I don’t have any interest in buying another one before they disappear.

Finding out that Lush had removed the honey from the ingredients list this year, and veganised the seasonal massage bar, made me super excited to try it out. In fact, no sooner had it arrived through my door, my skin was already being treated to a full body massage.
However, if like me, you don't always have someone to give you a massage, you can also use these bars in replacement of your regular body lotion. Although there is a difference: these solid bars are definitely more oily than a lotion or cream, they offer your skin a chance to absorb some good quality butters and oils, without anything else featured that may clog up your pores.
