Snow Fairy Soap

A Christmas period without an abundance of Snow Fairy would almost be the the same as having a birthday party without cake: it just wouldn't feel right. Yet that's not to say that us long-term Lush fans always appreciate the number of products that saturate the seasonal range every year. I'll be honest and say that there hasn't been a Snow Fairy scented product that has ever excited me as much as the original shower gel, and there hasn't ever been a Snow Fairy release that has made me want to buy more than the initial one I've invested in, aside from the potted body conditioner.

Yet this year Lush have decided that the millions of sickly candy-scented products wouldn't be complete without a soap to join their ranks. Last year's cold-pressed version wasn't obviously in agreement with a large percentage of consumers, so this year's rendition is a hexagonal block of bright pink goodness.

Sharing it's design with one of last year's bath bombs, this pink block of solid oils looks like the Barbie version of a snowflake. Yet a difference that I noticed straight away with the fragrance of this was that the inclusion of the marshmallow root seems to give this soap an almost extra powdery note on top of the usual sickly sweet scents that you would expect.

For those who have never tried Snow Fairy, this is easily Lush's most commercial and also their most synthetic fragrance that they have ever produced. You wouldn't be hard-pressed to find something similar to this smell in your regular high street stores: which is why many new Lush fans find themselves hooked on this scent family first.

As I have described in the million and one other reviews of Snow Fairy smelling cosmetics, the scent of this soap is like a playful, youthful candy floss aroma, with hints of raspberry bubblegum and synthetic vanilla alongside this. While the smell is very intense and does last a while on the skin, I wouldn't ever say that this fragrance was particularly complex or interesting.

What I found promising with this soap rendition is that it lathers up wit ease under the running water, and it didn't take more than a matter of seconds to produce enough foam to clean my entire body with. However, because it is rather generous, the block tends to shrink fairly quickly, and I found that after using it for the first week - even when I made a conscious effort to keep it away from too much water - that the a good third of the bar had been used. 

Although I'm only estimating a time frame, I can imagine a 250g bottle of the original shower gel lasting almost quadruple the amount of time that one of these Snow Fairy soaps would last me, and I happen to think that the smell of the shower gel is far better, and far more robust, than what this soap has offered me recently. 

As with most soaps I have tried from Lush, Snow Fairy isn't exactly the most moisturising on my skin, and I did need to moisturise afterwards in order to retain the moisture in my skin. Luckily, Lush have re-released their body conditioner this year so I was able to use that to restore some of the missing moisture. However, this is not something I would usually need to worry about with any of their shower gels and jellies. 

Therefore, if you're in love with the Snow Fairy scent, you will probably appreciate that Lush have created another format to get your eager hands on. However, if you're not particularly bothered by this fragrance family, you may wish to choose an alternative product to try, or stick with the shower gel if you fancy something sweet, but something that is equally moisturising. 

As a stocking filler, this would make a nice little gift, as it looks rather lovely and does have a pretty smell to enjoy. However, the speed in which the soap shrinks; and the lack of moisture that it leaves on your skin afterwards, means that this is not something I would advocate buying many of.

Bubblegum Toothy Tabs

I don't think anyone was at all surprised to learnt that Lush decided to release a Snow Fairy scented/tasting toothy tab. It was only a matter of time before the popular fragrance was incorporated into something that consumers could actually put in their mouth and almost class as 'edible.' It doesn't come as any surprise either that the tabs are sporting a playful shade of pink. 

As one of Lush's biggest selling shower gels, it makes complete sense that the company would have a go at bringing out the idea in as many formats as possible. Fast forward then to Bubblegum: one of ten limited edition toothy tabs that recently arrived on the shelves as exclusives for the Liverpool store.

Described as 'a candy floss flavoured treat', these limited edition tabs feature the amazing ingredient, marshmallow root, which adds a gorgeous sweet and delicious fragrance to many of Lush's other scrumptious aromas. In the case of these toothy tabs, they do an amazing job at not only replicating the smell of Snow Fairy perfectly, but they also help to create a taste that couldn't be any closer to what fans have probably always envisaged their favourite smell to taste like.

From the bottle, the sweet and playful notes of candy floss and raspberry bubblegum jump straight out and up your nose. After sniffing my pot for almost ten minutes, and then comparing it to the small bottle of the shower gel that I still have, I honestly couldn't tell any difference between the two besides from the fact that Bubblegum Toothy Tabs appeared a little powdery to my nose.

When in use, these exclusive tabs created a sweet and gently musky taste that tasted very much like the smell of Snow Fairy. It's an odd way of describing a taste, but those who have the fortunate of trying them out for themselves will no doubt understand what I mean when I say that they taste how the classic scent smells. 

As with most of Lush's other toothy tabs, Bubblegum contain a number of ingredients that work in the same way as regular toothpaste does: dicalcium phosphate anhydrous is the main ingredient in these toothy tabs and is a component used to help supplement the body's calcium intake, not to mention preventing the build up of tartar in the mouth; sorbitol is a natural alternative to sugar, which allows Lush to add flavour to this product without adding anything that'll rot your teeth; Lauroyl Sarcosine not only helps the product to foam up in the mouth but is also used to remove unwanted bacteria that may cause problems in the future.

To use them you simply pop a tab into your mouth, crunch down using your front teeth, wet your toothbrush and begin to brush your teeth as normal. The powdery mixture reacts with the water and the cream of tartar creates a foam that freshens your mouth and cleans away any stubborn pieces of food that may be lingering around. Unlike some of Lush's other tabs I have tried, this one melts almost immediately upon contact with moisture and you won't need to crunch these at all.

What I liked about these tabs was that they produced a rather generous foam when in use, and even when I rinsed my mouth out halfway through, I was still able to stimulate a lot more foam when beginning to brush my teeth again. I found that I could continue brushing my teeth for a good 5 minutes without running out of product and they left my mouth feeling thoroughly clean afterwards. It was just a shame that the taste of these was very mild and therefore the impact they had in my mouth was equally as disappointing.

While these tabs won't leave you with amazingly minty-fresh breath, and this may be something you'll have to get used to, it does leave a pleasant but very gentle taste for a short while afterwards. For those who dislike the heavy taste that mint can leave in your mouth, these would be a great alternative as they'll leave your teeth feeling clean without leaving much of a taste in your mouth afterwards. 

I was actually really impressed to find that the 'taste of Snow Fairy' stayed with me for a good couple of hours after I have initially brushed my teeth. During this time, my mouth felt and tasted super clean and I was confident that my breath was also gently sweet and fruity. Had I eaten within that time, I'm sure that the taste would have dispersed far quicker. However, it goes to show that the effects of these tabs last for quite an impressive amount of time.

Usually I opt for the toothy tabs that have a little more bite. There is something I quite enjoy about using a toothpaste or mouthwash that feels as if I have  burnt my mouth free of any living bacteria. However, these were really pleasant and make a great alternative to those more potent toothy tabs. I'm actually really grateful that Lush have decided to release these.

Calm Down Scalp Milk

I always struggle to comprehend how I’m going to review a product that has been designed to target a condition that I simply don’t have. How can I really test the efficiency of an item designed for greasy skin or flaky scalps, when I don’t suffer from either of these two aliments?

Usually I am able to find other uses for the product, which I can then suggest to other consumers; and sometimes I’m able to foresee how something will work based on how my skin/hair has reacted to it. However, this does mean that my reviews of these products can never be as accurate as I would like them to be, and this Lush Showcase exclusive is one of those examples.

Calm Down Scalp Milk is a product designed specifically for irritated, itchy and dry heads. The generous inclusion of rose water allows this milk to calm the scalp and reduce any irritation, whilst the salicylic acid gets to work at using its  antimicrobial properties to remove anything that may be causing the irritation in the first place.

As if this wasn't enough, the scalp milk also contains witch hazel to clean and refresh the skin on your scalp; menthol crystals to soothe, cool and offer a very light tingling sensation afterwards; and an abundance of coconut oil to rehydrate and moisturise the pores and the hair.

Smell wise, it is the cade oil that makes the biggest impression - offering a very strong (but strangely not potent) smoky smell. The inclusion of both the tonka absolute and marshmallow root decoction then adds a sweet scent as well, which although different, does smell very similar to the likes of All Good Things Liquid Perfume. Much like I described that fragrance, this one also smells like Snow Fairy turning rebellious.

To use this, the idea is that you apply it in between shampooing and conditioning, and it immediately gets to work at soothing and pampering the scalp. Simply wash out your shampoo; squirt this onto your fingertips; massage into your scalp; and then apply your conditioner before rinsing it all out and patting your hair down. 

What I found was that my head felt really soft and clean immediately after using the milk, and there was a slight tingling sensation from the menthol crystals, although it wasn't particularly strong enough to notice it for very long afterwards. The scent itself stayed on my scalp/hair for a short time while my hair was drying, but this soon dissipated when my locks were bone dry.

Although it's designed for the scalp, I found that the condition of my hair improved a little after a week of using Calm Down every day, and I genuinely believe that this was from the condition of my pores improving and sending added moisture throughout my hair. My locks felt straighter and not as dry and frizzy, and I was able to wear my hair down without much prior preparation.

To test it out, I also applied Calm Down to my locks and left the milk to work its magic overnight. In fact, this would be a great weekly task for anyone with a sensitive scalp, as I would wake to find my head and hair just feeling 'more alive.' I know this is a terrible way to describe my experience, and it probably doesn't help you at all. However, my scalp just felt different and in a good way, which is why I have a good feeling that this would work magic on those who actually have itchy or sensitive scalps.

Finally, I also found that you could apply Calm Down to your hair like any other balm or spray and it left my locks looking shinier, as well as bringing out my natural highlights a little more in the process. What I was left with was a head of hair that felt well-pampered and beautiful, and I genuinely believe that this could help my hair to grow a little quicker because of how amazing my scalp would function after having this applied once a week.

Overall, I honestly cannot say whether or not this scalp milk would be effective at treating and reducing itching and irritation. However, my hair and head feel much better for using Calm Down, and the way that my scalp has been feeling makes me truly believe that this will perform exactly as it states it does on the bottle.

Regular readers of mine will know that I Am Ten is perhaps my all time favourite bubble bar, and what I would give for Lush to bring it back, even temporarily, takes my love of Lush to a whole new level of extreme. In fact, it was this very product that made me first fall in love with the America Cream scent. So the idea of a bath bomb offering the same fragrance simply blew my mind.

Marshmallow World Bath Bomb was one of the twelve community bath bombs to come out of the Lush vault last month, but has easily made it into my top three for many reasons. Firstly, the design of this limited edition is gorgeous. The vibrant pink outer shell with stripes of yellow and white really did make me think of sweet, fluffy marshmallows, so my sweet tooth was already on edge before I'd even tried it out in the bath.

Secondly, as it shares its scent with the gorgeous American Cream range, the smell of this is simply sublime. It's such a delicate scent but definitely not one that I would describe as being weak or subtle. Sweet and powdery, this bath bomb offers an aroma that reminds me walking into an old-fashioned sweet shop and sniffing the jars of freshly-made strawberry bonbons.

There is something very musky and powdery about this fragrance that I love so vehemently. Featuring lavender and clary sage, my nose detects get a delicate floral note from the former ingredient, without it offering the usual lavender aroma that you find in most other products. The vanilla absolute then laces them all together in a sweet, hazy cloud of bliss that just keeps on giving and giving. In all honesty, this smell really suits this format, and it's one that just keeps on giving and giving.

In the water, Marshmallow World fizzes away like crazy - sending out thick  foamy waves of white and pink. As it continues to bubble away, thin laces of yellow ebb across the surface and dissolve into the water. What you're left with is a creamy, pastel pink coloured water with creamy blanket of white swirls across the top. It's simply beautiful.

As if that wasn't impressive enough, this bath bomb also offers a scent that stays as prominent in the water as it does before you use it. I could smell the American Cream fragrance throughout my whole bath, and it even lingered a little on my skin afterwards. As I don't have any of the American Cream Body Lotion left, I had to make do without, although I will be using my other Marshmallow World Bath Bomb once my American Cream Liquid Perfume arrives.

Overall, this is an amazing bath bomb and one that should become a regular member of stores across the country, and indeed the world. This would be incredibly popular for those who love the recognised fragrance, especially those vegans amongst us that are unable to use the original hair conditioner. I certainly hope that this is not the last we'll see of this bath bomb, because it would be a real waste, and a shame, if it was.

Snowcloud Soap

Sometimes I get the impression that Lush put a great deal of effort into their releases; other times it seems almost as if they’ve not thought things through. When it comes to Snowcloud Soap, this beautiful little seasonal special is sure to be overlooked, when up against the likes of the stunning Golden Pear Soap, and the classic Baked Alaska, that is so potent in smell and colour. However, those that do venture into trying this soap out to size, will hopefully appreciate just how lovely the soap actually is. 

Shaped like a cloud and sporting a rather dull-looking white/grey design, Snowcloud offers a sweet and slightly fruity floral fragrance. Sharing its scent with the non-vegan Orange Blossom Liquid Perfume, I was extremely happy that I was finally able to enjoy this scent, although I would obviously have preferred it if I had a better format in which to do it with. While I was able to briefly appreciate it when I used Elbow Grease for the first time, my guilt at discovering it wasn’t vegan was enough to turn my experience bitter very quickly.

Made from a collaboration of rosewood, ylang ylang, orange flower, sandalwood and neroli, this soap sounded on paper like it was going to offer a very heavy fragrance. Yet, Lush have managed to balance out these components so that you experience something rich and robust; yet something that is also beautifully delicate and feminine. 

The rosewood, ylang ylang and orange flower create a dry, musky and very floral base for this soap - yet one that isn’t particularly heavy on the senses. I think the inclusion of the sandalwood helps these floral notes from being too aggressive, as there is a very subtle wordiness that rounds all four components off perfectly. Alongside this, the inclusion of the neroli adds a delicate sprinkling of citrus, which adds a slight bitterness, but helps to make the aroma slightly refreshing as well.

As with all of Lush’s gourmet soaps, this one features a base of cocoa butter - which means that it is a little more moisturising than their usual soaps. As with most of the seasonal range, I did find that this one was created a thick, slightly oily lather to clean myself with, and there was an abundance of it to use so I didn’t keep having to hold this under the shower to stimulate the ‘foam’. In fact, I would highly recommend that you keep this away from the running water as much as you can, as this soap shrunk really quickly for me, and definitely doesn’t work out good value for money when it’s dissolved away into nothing after only two weeks.

What sets this soap apart from the other seasonal releases, is that this one also features kaolin - an ingredient known for absorbing excess moisture, cleaning out pores and softening the skin. I found that Snowcloud was great to use on my hands after a day out in the freezing cold. Using this straight away helped to elevate the redness and soften my skin at the same time. Having said that, I wouldn’t only use this soap as a hand wash, as it does leave its scent on your skin afterwards, and it seems like a bit of a waste to use it on only one body part. 

Ultimately, Snowcloud is definitely a soap that most likely got overlooked in favour of some of the more vibrant-looking variations - which is a shame given how much this soap offers. I actually really enjoyed using my single piece of this, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this appeared at some point in the near future.

When I first heard that Lush were bringing back Prince Charming, I was thrilled. While I wouldn't say it was one of my top ten favourite shower gels from the company, it is still a really great product, and one that has such a wonderful and unique smell. However, when I realised that it would be a Prince Charming Shower Cream on sale, and not a gel, I was a little bit apprehensive. 

Although I have a lot of faith in Lush and the way they conduct themselves, up until this point I still firmly believed that shower gels were superior to creams - if only because of the fact that they've proven to be far better lathers when I compare the likes of Lord Of Misrule and The Comforter versions against most of the other gels that the company have ever released. 

Initial thoughts were very positive - the cream looked far more beautiful than the original gel - sporting a shade of bright flamingo pink, with a gorgeous shimmer that gave the product a sort of pearl effect when being used in the shower. I thought the colour was far more 'fitting' than the gel, and this sparked an interest to explore the shower cream further.

Looking at the ingredients list, there is not much that differs from the gel. Containing a marshmallow root and Fair Trade vanilla pod infusion, pomegranate juice, grapefruit, sandalwood and geranium oil, the 'base' ingredients are on par with the original release. So it is therefore unsurprising to discover that both versions smell near enough identical.

As I have previous made known, this is one of those odd products that I find fairly difficult to describe - not that the fragrance of the cream is complex at all, just that the few notes that are present offer their services all at once, which makes it quite tricky to really work out which is the stronger smell - a fact that means there are quite a lot of different descriptions for this scent. Everyone's nose is different, but I'll try to describe what I get upon opening the bottle.

My initial reaction is that I smell a sweet, slightly vanillary fruity smell. It's a little like if Rose Jam was to procreate with a marshmallow and then have lots of Happy Hippy children. You get the sweetness from the grapefruit oil, a smooth creamy edge of vanilla and then just the slightest kick of marshmallow that gives it a chocolatey edge. While the geranium oil is fairly low down on the ingredient list, it has enough kick here to make its presence known almost immediately, and I can definitely detect that very subtle floral tone that rounds it off beautifully. 

Out of the bottle, the cream is quite a thick, gloopy consistency - very similar to Yummy Mummy Shower Gel that was released last year. Surprisingly, it has quite a sticky consistency and you can really feel it coating your skin when you massage it across your body.

What I loved about the cream is that as soon as it came into contact with the hot water from my shower, the smell of cocoa butter came through and made itself more pronounced. While it didn't overpower the other elements, or change the original dynamics of the cream, it did add a lovely bonus to enjoy.

Unfortunately, I found that this wasn't the best latherer I have used from Lush, but that's not to say it was terrible. I found that it was better to stimulate the foam in your hands first and then smother it all over your body, as when it was rubbed across the skin, it wasn't so generous with the lather it created. At times, I even found that I could feel the product in my hand but I wasn't able to see it on my skin when cleaning myself.

Having said this, my skin still felt as soft and smooth as it would with any good Lush shower gel, and the scent it left on my skin afterwards was stunning. It definitely did its job of moisturising and cleaning at the same time, and I found myself sniffing my arms and hands afterwards to get a glimpse of the smell that was left

Overall, this shower cream is unique and wonderful - a product that I hope makes a reappearance year after year. Although it didn't foam up as easily as the gel version did, everything else about it was far superior to the gel. Lush have definitely improved this product and I am very happy that it is now produced in this format.

After excitedly making my way through almost all of the brand new bath oils from the new Oxford Street store, I realised that the only ones I had left were reformulated and redesigned versions of older products. While I was interested and rather intrigued to see how they differed from their older siblings, I wasn't as enthused as I had been over the newcomers, and assumed that I would feel the same way even after I'd tried them out in the bath.

Surprisingly, I discovered that not only did some of the revamped editions prove to be pretty amazing replicas - all of which bettered from the original product, but that some of them impressed me so much that I actually preferred them to some of the brand new exclusives I had tested out weeks before. Mmmelting Marshmallow Moment was one of those items. 

Looking absolutely nothing like the original bath melt, this petite but rather beautiful tab is different from most of the bath oils available in the flagship store. While it seems to weigh the same and performs the same in the water, this Snow Fairy scented melt is different in shape - presenting itself as a sort of miniature hockey puck as opposed to a large-sized grape.

Sporting a stunning pink layer on top and an equally gorgeous golden-yellow layer underneath, this bath oil is decorated with a gentle tickle of lustre across each surface - a gesture that isn't mimicked throughout the entire product so you don't have to worry about having your bath tub filled with too much glitter. 

Containing both marshmallow powder and synthetic musk, Mmmelting Marshmallow Bath Oil has a wonderful soft and rather playful aroma - like raspberry bubblegum intertwined with a touch of vanilla and a little hint of fruit. In the same way as its chunkier older sister, this product gives off a really strong but wonderfully uplifting fragrance that fills the bathroom and makes you feel as if you've arrived at a sweet store. 

Much like the melt, this newer model also contains both cocoa butter and almond oil, not to mention the bonus addition of shea butter to not only make this a really moisturising experience for anyone lucky enough to 'swim' in its waters, but to leave your skin looking and feeling radiant. 

While the melt offers wave upon wave of white and pink cream, this oil melts at a much slower pace and gently ebbs oils across the surface before turning the bath water a very light shade of pink. Although it doesn't produce a display as colourful, Mmmelting Marshmallow Moment Bath Oil definitely offers you a mesmerising and rather beautiful shimmery performance in the water. With a  sprinkling of bicarbonate of soda and citric acid to boot, this little gem will also give off a little fizz to round off your experience. 

As I mentioned above, this bath oil is a slow melter, so it may be worth you climbing in the tub while its getting to work and enjoying the show while submerged under the silky-soft water. What it does offer is a wonderful, strong fragrance that stays for the whole bath - wrapping itself around your skin and leaving you smelling gorgeous afterwards.

The oils are balanced enough that they won't leave you feeling greasy or oily, yet theres enough there to make the water feel lovely and buttery - not to mention leaving your skin soft, smooth and beautiful. While I would probably use these as part of cocktails rather than by themselves in the future, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this product and will definitely be picking up a few more next time I make the trek into central London.
